Heard a comic talking about his home life.

"We were poor while I was growing up. We couldn't even afford Ice cream. Of course, we did not know that.

After dinner, when we were playing, Mom would call for dessert.

Then she'd put a spoonful of sugar in a bowl and pour in some milk.

We would not hear her call and eventually wander into the kitchen.

Mom, I thought we were having Ice cream.

We were. Yours melted."

When we would visit my aunt in Wisconsin (where she and my Uncle lived on a farm, in a 2-room log cabin), my mom and aunt would tell my cousins and siblings that we were getting a “treat” and to each get one mitten. Then they would go out and break icicles off the room of the cabin eave, bring them in and hand us each an icicle:facepalm:

It wasn’t funny then, and it isn’t funny now

In northern New England, you pour a few drops of maple syrup on a snowball and it's called, "sugar on snow," as if that's a special treat. They even make them to sell. The funny part is, people pay.

That's maple taffy, I fun treat here in Canada at the sugar bush when the sap is flowing.

When I was growing up in Indiana, my Mom would make "cold bread pudding" She'd put sugar in a glass about half full of milk then stir it up well. Then we'd take the crust off of white bread and tear it into little pieces and put it in the glass till all the sugar milk was absorbed. We thought it was the best dessert ever. Of course, our milk was from the one old cow we had. The milk would sit in the refrigerator until the cream rose to the top. We'd skim off the cream to churn for butter. I guess we were poor but we didn't realize it. All true.
