Fuel vent Burping

We have 2005 H460LE with a 76 hp yanmar turbo and a Panda generator. When fueling at the dock the diesel fuel always burps out of the fuel vent. I have tried pumping the fuel very slowly and yet without warning the fuel burps out of the vent.

That was my problem as well until I discovered that the float on the fuel tank was displaying the wrong level of fuel in the tank. When the gauge displayed 3/4 tank - it was actually full. I removed the float - it is similar to the float on a toilet tank - and I bent it down a bit. Now it is accurate.

Could be a dip in the vent hose, with fuel sitting in it. As you fill the tank, pressure builds and forces the fuel out of the hose. I had this issue on a previous boat and it would burp after adding a few gallons even though the tank was nearly empty. The vent hose needs to lead as straight up as possible with no low spots in it. Fuel sitting in the hose will also degrade it over time causing odor in the boat and eventual leaks and hose failure. This needs to get fixed ASAP, that ounce of two of diesel in the water could get you a $10,000 fine.

as the fuel goes in, air has to come out...and when the air is rushing out of the vent, and the fuel level is nearing the vent as you fill the tank, any motion of the boat that causes the fuel to splash over the vent port in the tank, will create a "burp"... or when it becomes full and there is no more air to come out, fuel will exit the vent... because the filler neck is higher than the vent outlet.
there are vent filters that can be installed to eliminate the problem, and there are also containers you can place over the vent to catch the "burp", but can still be messy.... the separator filters are the best choice:D
