Can you fab your own fuel lines with approved hose and AWAB clamps
or do they need to be crimped connectors for the coast guard

Crimped connectors are not required. You can use hose clamps.

I got fuel lines from AutoZone.

If you need or prefer crimped connections then truck supply / maintenance shops are handy and should be able to make you up a length of crimped hose to suit quickly and fairly cheaply.

You will want to make sure all your fuel hose is marine rated for diesel. The hose you will want will be rated as A1-15. The surveyors & insurers are getting very picky of fuel hose, fuel fill hose and fuel vent hose.....
