I just purchased a Hunter 31. It does not have a fuel gauge currently. Has anyone had the experience of installing a gauge on a 31? Would I need to remove the tank? Are there kits available for this? Or am I relegated to the "consumption per hour" method?

You would need to cut a hole in the tank for a fuel gauge. I don't know about sealing the fitting after the hole is cut either.

If you decide to do this check out WEMAUSA.COM. They have nice electric units at a very reasonable price.

The fuel gauge on the boat stopped working a couple of years ago and I have not missed it the least bit. The only information it reliable provided was wether the tank was full or empty but could not give a useful approximation of available fuel in between. I have always relied on the hour meter and the engine's average burn rate. This provides me quite closely the amount of fuel I have left on the tank at all times. I check my figures everytime I refuel and I am consistently inside the short end of a 1/4 of a gallon for a 10+ gallon refill. It is great when you can approximate your fuel availability to a 30 minute span. It takes practice but I can take a glance at the hour meter and know pretty closely how much fuel I have left. I could not do that with the fuel gauge. Sorry for the dissertation but cannot understand how someone can be relegated to a superior method.

Mellis...

I put a fuel gage sender in my H34's tank when I had it opened for a clean-out. Cutting in any hole will put debris in the tank so you need to consider the consequences. I tapped the mounting holes into the tank plastic and used the gasket that came with the Tempo gauge. Haven't had any leaks in the four years since.

Attached is a pic of the tank top. The gage sender is the small silver thing near the fill hose.

Millis... you did not mention the year of your 31. I would like to know how your project comes out. I have a 87 Hunter 31 and the fuel tank is hard plastic. I have also thought of installing a fuel guage, but haven't decided on how to do this. The tank is square in shape and the top has a little age sag in it, which I think will cause a leak problem if a hole is cut in the top where you would put the sending unit.
Benny, I like the sound of your system. Not really interested in installing something that will cause me headaches down the line. If you guys knew how I read the fuel level now, I may be laughed off this web site............

You can buy a sender that uses the same hole as the fuel return line and does both functions. I did this and it works fine.
