Gauge, continued.
John,I guess the listed fuel tank capacity wouldn’t be the first error ever found in Catalina’s literature. To add to my previous post, you may be right about inaccurate instrument calibration, but in my case I think my tachometer is accurate within a couple of hundred rpms or better. I know it’s not exact, because I adjusted it myself after putting in a new alternator. I did it by adjusting to 1000 rpms at idle (without engine shaking) and 3000 rpms maximum, both done in neutral. I’ve considered buying a Stewart-Warner hand held mechanical tachometer for calibration, at about $70, but I’m not sure the additional accuracy would be very useful. My speedometer is calibrated to the DGPS, post S/A, in no current, and no wind conditions, so I believe it to be very accurate. The big variable, at least in my case is the very nonstandard Autoprop. It tends to mimic an overpropped condition, though it will reduce pitch in certain highly loaded conditions. I can reach a top speed in flat water of 7.1 knots at about 2200 rpm. This is about half throttle. Maximum rpms in gear are 2650 or so at full throttle, but no increase in speed (just noise, and she unsuccessfully tries to get up on a plane). I’m assuming you have the standard two-blade prop? If that’s true, then I’m surprised you don’t show higher maximum rpms.Anxious to find out what you hear from Catalina.
