Topped off the tank with 10 gal of diesel yesterday, dock hand had trouble getting fuel into hose opening. It kept foaming up. Also, the boat came with a smaller hose stuck in the fill hose, any ideas what it is for? Is it adding to the slow filling of the tank? 'Never seen this before.

Had the same trouble on my old stink boat found the vent line was kinked off. No idea what the small hose is for unless it's some kind of vent. My old gen set at home has tank vent line under the fill cap but cap is vented when closed. Not a good idea on a boat.

Mine has a 1 1/2" hose straight to the tank (no smaller hose inside). The vent hose (5/8" I think) exits the tank and goes down to the bilge before coming up to the the vent fitting in the transom. Its definitely possible to get some fuel in that lower leg, which could cause enough back pressure to cause what you describe. Its also possible to blow any fuel accumulated in the vent line out the transom fitting if the tank is being filled faster than the air can bubble by any fuel trapped in the vent line (not good!!!). The solution for me was to remove the vent line at the transom and blow any accumulated fuel back into the tank.

If you have a shop vac you can hold the hose over the vent to clear it. Pressure it back, not vacuum it out. Then I attached the hose as high as I could to prevent fuel laying in there.

Bought her in 1998. Still only half done improving. Sailed her to Florida then trucked her home. Veerrry long story.

Mine is a 1983. Here's a picture of the fuel hose and vent, minus the engine.
I hope that the designers had a good reason for doing it this way? Or is this a problem on all 37's ?

I had the same problem with my Hunter 37c. Last year when I had the fuel tank replaced, the mechanic replace the filler line. Said he ran down and around and was crazy. Now it does not do foam up!

Had similar problem in C33. Problem turned out to be a droop in the vent line just after the fuel tank. I cut the hose open at the droop and found about a cup full of diesel blocking the vent line. I replaced the thirty-five year old hose being careful not to leave a droop and can now fill without splash back.
