opened seacock before starting engine, thought I heard water flushing thru engine, just got a short distance and temp alarm sounded, no water, appears the handle rotated but not the valve, or at least partially. need advice, can I replace seacock without sinking?

With your being in Fl., there's a CHANCE it can be done without without hauling the boat. You have to decide how much risk you're wiling to take.

Get yourself an expandable plug and dive under the boat and insert it in the thru hull. That SHOULD keep any water from getting in.

Make sure you have a suitable wooden plug inside in case thing go wrong.

Next steps are crucial. Grip the thru hull and then grip the seacock where the thru hull enters it. This wil reduce any bending forces. Try to unscrew the seacock. Apply a reasonable amout of force but if it doesn't come easily, STOP and call it quits. Haul it and do it on the hard.

Remember, this is me several thousand miles away in my armchair telling you what to do. Your boat, your decision.

ralph;
thanks for the advice, I had two versions off the internet-one saying don't risk it and another saying "piece of cake". so I didn't touch, I called a mechanic, came with his son who had been in business with his dad for some time. His son travis had been in the coast guard before joining his dad looked at the seacock and put a vise grip on the incoming and just unscrewed the valve popped it off, put a plug in the pipe(which I had handy) his dad came back with new valve, scewed it on and was done. Of course I kinda had my heart in limbo thinking of the worst scenero. these guys were good, the dad said if he even thought there was a hint of something going wrong he wouldn't have touched this unless it was on the hard. they just knew their job, and their confidence impressed me, I deceided that these guys will be go to for all my mechanical needs.
thanks for the info.

Glad all went well.

You'll want to keep track of these guys as good mechanics are hard to find.
