Fresh water strainer replacement...recommendations?

Our bronze water strainer is original to our '87 Hunter 35, it is not in great shape, and I am looking to replace it. Does anyone know what unit is recommended for Yanmar 3GM30F? Thanks!

Shop Groco. Made in the U.S. Just fit to the hose nipples. Strainers are not a specialty part.

What's wrong with the original? Mine is a Perko, and I installed the gasket kit, cleaned up the plastic cylinder and it should be good for another 30 years. There's not too much to go wrong with them that the gasket kit wont fix.

The only reason for the replacement is that the current unit is just so corroded, green, and it bleeds into the engine bilge... just trying to figure out the GPH to make sure that I get the right one. Groco is my choice as well.

A new bronze strainer will look like your present strainer in a few seasons. I would recommend cleaning your existing bronze strainer with a home made concoction of white vinegar, flour and salt. Check out this link for the specifics. http://www.howtocleanstuff.net/how-to-clean-bronze/ I personally like to use more white vinegar and most of the time straight white vinegar does the trick.

If you have at least 90% of flow area, why clean it? Corrosion "crust" is natures way of "scabbing". Cleaning will expose more fresh metal to just corrode again. If the flow is restricted, gently brush it open and rinse.

Does "bleed" mean "leaking"?

Find part # for existing perco strainer you will find that's a $400 strainer and they sell a rebuilding kit with rubber or cork gaskets I chose rubber . Clean and enjoy the 300 + dollars left in your pocket

Our original 1991 sea water strainers (three on our boat) look green, but clean up nicely. Our 4JH2-TE uses this type, which should work for your engine:

What do you mean by bleeds? Do they leak water or air? If water where do they leak? These strainers are almost indestructible, but do require periodic maintenance. If you do replace yours, would you please throw your old one my way?

Our current strainer does not seem to be leaking water. But it does leave a green mark on the walls and inside the bilge under the engine. I was thinking more of cosmetics and then function. I will certainly try the vinegar concoction. Thanks, and will send pics of the post vinegar treatment!

I followed Mainsail's page for rebuilding a strainer. I had a perko with the cork gaskets. After getting the bronze all clean and shiny, i sprayed it with a thin coat of clear lacquer. looked like new from that point on...
