Hey brother Scott

I am only speaking for myself as a fan of the aquatic life, but most all of us sailors are dreamers and our dreams are not lessened when others enjoy their dreams. when the p.o. gave Patrick the boat he was passing on his dream that he was no longer able to live They are kindred spirits just separated by a generation. If I saw you and your friends on a sinking boat, I would do everything I could to bring bring you on board and get you safely to shore. When the lines were tied, I would hand you a cold beer not an invoice. NO MORE POSTS,IM SHUTTING UP AND GOING SAILING LANCE

Scott , I could explain about not kicking a man

when he is down, about fair play about the unreasonableness of greed but I don't think that you are able to understand that sometimes , some people just can't bring themselves to take advantage at another persons expense.

My two cents again

Scott, by your comments it appears you missed the original post. Patrick, Turns out it’s a keel stepped mast. What bulkheads are missing that you’re worried about? It doesn’t look gutted to me. Rule #1 Don’t set a time frame to get anything done. You will miss splash date after splash date, with increasing disappointment unless you don’t set one. It gets done when it gets done. Don’t rush it, enjoy working on the boat. Rule #2 Enjoy working on the boat. I love working on my boat and I’m not going to rush through having fun on any part of it. Spoken like a true Harley owner. Rule #3 Keep saying to yourself, “How do you eat an elephant?” One bite at a time. Make an emergency tiller before you shove off. A square socket welded to a piece of pipe will work. Figure out how to use it before you shove off. Have someone with a power boat follow you on your first few sea trails before setting out on your 90 mile trip home.

If ithis vessel was a 36' Sabre...

...instead of a Morgan, would the nay-sayers and the un-decided feel better about the chances of the Phoenix flying again? Then again, the chances of a Sabre falling to this condition are slim. Nevermind... One other thing: Ross, if you continue to stick with that attitude you'll never become "The Donald" (and I'm sure you're happier as a result) :) Something about "paying it forward" comes to mind.

Patrick, go for it!

Don't listen to all the negative comments, you can do it, I did it this past year with a Mac 25. My buddy told me that if I could pull it out of the pasture I could have it. It sat for 8 years with no cover and completely open. I did the same, scrubbed the inside and scrubbed again. I worked on it for a few months and sailed all this summer. Bought used parts wherever I could, many helped me on this site. Bought some used sails, mast support mount, used stays all around. I really got to know my boat inside and out. I'm going to try to add some pictures here of before and after. Good luck, Mac

Sailorman, Pay attention to these last few posts. I like your project and think you'll have a spectacular before and after photo essay when you're done. But don't start out only to have it pulled away from you. Do a title search and get the title signed over to you before you get too far into it. I don't know what your relationship to the donor is, but if he can't produce the title for you it's a major red flag. After all, whatever shape it's in, it's not a canoe in someones back yard. You need the title to get it registered anyway. Looks like a cloth liner in some shots. Bummer.

"Tallow", the 2nd interesting word...

...I read today. Ahhhh, families, what would Thanksgiving and Christmas be w/o them? My siblings & I got busted last Christmas when our contest was discovered: winner was the individual that discovered the oldest out-of-date "sell by date". This occurred in the house where our parents throw nickels around as though they are man-hole covers. No tallow, but same idea... The other word: cephalopod...in the comics, no less!

I too am a nay-sayer, BUT>>>>>>>

I too am a nay-sayer, but Patrick is taking over the boat anyway. Given that, THIS thread should be all about how to get the boat moved and how to rebuild. The nay-saying should be on the other thread - "Free Boat" and not here. And, geez, cant we disagree in a more civilized and sensitive manner? BTW Patrick, as long as your not taking on water, I would feel safe with having it towed or mounting an 8 HP motor. These hulls are not that delicate. Just dont sail it. Tony B

Ross is a good man ...

And I think he is thoughtful and generous, too. We've all come to know him in this forum. Dan, I did read the other posts and there were many clues. Many I probably missed, but I think I caught some, too. Why should sailorman hold the PO in high esteem. I thought I read that the PO originally wanted $3,000 for the boat. After looking at the pictures of the boat, I don't have any esteem for the PO. Why do we assume he is down? How do we know? For all we know the guy could be the type of person who would chisel anybody out of their last dime. That being said, what do we know about sailorman? I think he mentioned that he has an ex-wife and kids. That is the reason for his financial difficulty and he is not able to afford the price of a decent boat at any price. But he is willing pay for improvements as he goes, considering that he can get cheap deals, and he wants to put in a lot of sweat equity. I can sympathize with a guy that has alimony and child support payments. I can also sympathize with a divorced guy who wants to get a sailboat so that he can spend more quality time with his kids. I'm not getting that impression. I didn't hear anything about that. It sounds like he is a guy who wants to put all his spare change into chasing a sailboat dream for himself. The amount of sweat equity that he will have to put into this will certainly detract from the amount of time that he can spend with his kids. This sounds like a guy who has kids and needs to grow up and put more effort into his family. It sounds to me like all the money and work that he plans to put into this boat would be better spent somewhere else to improve the life of people that may need to depend on him. Of course, I could be wrong, and maybe the threads have some clues that are saying something else. My suggestion to sailorman, since he appears to be set on doing this, is to put a little thought into the financial reality of this deal, since it may be affecting some people in his life. That is why I suggest that he not be taken advantage of, and look for an opportunity to protect his financial well-being (for the sake of his family). Ross, do you have a reason why the guy should be so generous to the PO?

Ross, didn't you read the same things I did?

FREE BOAT, SCENE1, ACT II

hi again all. Got home alittle late. Had a good and bad day today. Started out early but had a pounding head ache, went back to bed. Might be the two gallons of bleach i was breathng all day?. Anyway, I took my sawzall-wait, back-up. I approached the boat cautiously, had to check bilge for water..........NONE. Spent all night closed up and no more water than when I left. Pokeing around today i found several places where water/rain can get in, cool huh!? Took sawzall and started cutting away old rotten/saturated floor. Slow going, first i used a wonderbar and removed the square wood tiles overlaying the 1 inch plywood floor, go ta mind infarct about what they are called-keep thinking terrazo, but thats not it, its chekerboard pattern. After i got most of the floor up i scruubed the bilge(actually the whole hull under the floor. It has a slime on it from being wet for a long time-remember the sump pump with float. He left it there so he wouldnt sink, butit never removed all the water. Don't know why he didn't hook up shore power to the battery charger onboard. Probably don't work. Anyway yhe bilge stinks bad, like raw sewage. I think i will have to remove everything inside to get rid of it. Or when it dries out maybe be ok. Then i built a temporary bulkhead and fastenned it to the existing fiberglass tabing, turned out ok, but i rushed it cuz was getting dark. Will fix it up tomorrow. Thanks for the advice guys. WOw, again so many replies. I am meeting the owner tomorrow after he finishes his twelve hour shift-see he is a nurse, too. He works for poison control 7pm-7am. He has a truckload of stuff to give me that goes with the boat. Don' know where he puts it though, there was so much stuff in the boat already. I hauled two half truckloads away already. I scraped some barnicles off today with a scraper duck taped to a pole. They come off pretty easy. Will venture into the water tomorrow-its cold, about 70 degress. Tous floridians 70 water is cold. but the air temp will be 82. The boat is sitting higher and higher after each day. Probably about six inches abouve previous level. Hey, maybe i will have a light nimble racer when I'm done???? Why is the grid system under the floor loose laid? Why not glassed in place like stringers. Why is it 2x4, why is the flooring 1-1/4 inch thick? I am 6'4", and love the headroom with the floor gone, I can actually stand straight up and stretch! Gonna think about using smaller/thinner mat'l and glassing over it for strength. Hey, when i remove both setees(one is already gone) its so wide you could have a dance with a dozen friends. Gonna rethink the whole interior layout, maybe go to the morgan rendevouis this year for ideas-remember its a clean chalkboard! Hey maybe even a pilot house/trawler thing. You never know? There is a rudder, its just that it don't move with the wheel, one reply had it right its hydraulic and needs to pump the tire pump to pressurize it. The owner is giving me an emergency tiller that fits into a place on the inside transom. I have experienced my first feelings of beeing overwhelmed today. But It will all go away when I sail it-got that "SAIL" it home. I am not a motor boater. Its not a sailboat until you hoist the sails. I long to turn off the motor. Thought about just sailing it out without motor, but I have to do a u turn around Tampa General hosp.and don;t know how well she tacks and it a bit narrow. Ross in Tampa, thanks I'll let you know. NOT SURE ABOUT THE POSTER THAT WANTS ME TO DRAG MY ASS AND TRY TO BLACKMAIL THE PO. mUST HAVE BEEN WEENED OFF THE TIT TO EARLY OR SOMETHING. Sure it is doing him a favor, and me as well. He is upstanding, responsible caring man, and his wife is just a peach, she can;t wait til all the boat stuff is out of the garage. He wanted to rebuild, but its too much for a liver transplant recipient to do. I will dicuss title tomorrow. sure its good. Trust is a thing that few remember or instill. I trust him, and if i get screwd then oh well. Can't fight my instincts. The time frame is mutual. I start a contract at work in January and work 4 twelves a week, gotta do it now, and the drive to the big city is too much, Although, being on bayshore working on the boat in 82degree weather with those joggers and rollerbladers in next to nothing is a site to see i will dearly miss. Just wish i and the boat were more presentable! Letterman, there is walpaper/burlap stuff on the inside hull walls, all gotta go. Peace, Patrick

The "PO" certainly has an option. He can just walk away from the boat like hundreds of others do every year. To suggest trying to extort money from the apparently quite ill PO is just plain crass. (We Jerseyians freely exercise our right to disagree voiciferously!) At least he didn't have Vinny and Guido take it out the inlet amd make it disappear. OOps! That's Florida, not Jersey. My bad. After 30 some odd years if the PO has the title it is likely to be clear. How about just asking him? Jim; If anyone's interested, there is a quite similar Out Island 33 for sale at Millers in Toms River New Jersey. It has been sitting in the brackish water of the Toms River for no less than 10 years that I know of. I wonder how thick the barnacles are on that hull?

ross and scott, and the other.

Just got off the phone with my 14 yo son. He bought a dinghy from his friend today. Huess the apple don't fall far from the tree. As far as financial resposibility?????I am getting a free boat, spending a few bucks to get it home. Over the next 4 years will probably gut it, redesign it, and sail it a bunch for alot less than the lowest price morgan 33 on yachtworld-check it out. I don't have to have, stove, frig, hot water, pressure water, flush head with holding tank, airconditioning, or any of that. Just an aux engine to get me out the channel and sail it, empty, ugly, not a big problem. Sure i would like a shinny, pretty thing with all the bells and wistles, but i am willing to just have a bigger boat that someday I acan sail to farr off places. The suggestion to charge the po is just sad. I feel sorry for you sitting back and judging people on a few sentences written on the computer. Will keep you guysd informed. Also pics of my hree boys, 22,16,and 14 helping me work on the boat and learing valuable skills!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Parquet? I saw that once in an Endeavour, didn't like it. Not bad in houses though. Headache could be allergies if you spent awhile in that closed space.
