Scott Patrick and his ex wife seem to have some

children in common but little else. I don't understand why two people can be in love and not find that important enough to fight like the devil to keep it together. I have 41 years of keeping a marriage intact. It isn't always easy but fro my point of view it beats all of the other options. I don't expect others to pay for my mistakes and I won't pay for the mistakes of others. I pay what I owe and expect others to do the same. I won't exploit an advantage if I think someone will suffer.

I love the multi-line office phone

The on in picture 25 that is bolted on the wall in the v-berth. LOL What was this doing? Running a biusiness out this boat? All I can tell you is that you are going to need a lot more than a 12 pack of Diet Coke (on the stove in picture 21) to get enough buzz and energy to fix this one up. I have seen better boats given away for less. If you really roamed marina's you could find better giveaways

Patric:

I want to see detailed pictures of the chain plates from outside and inside as well as the bulkheads in that area. It would be easier if you posted them on one of the Photo Forums here on sailboat owners. [Hunter owners, Message boards, Hunter forums, Project/Photo Forum] We'll be able to SEE the pictures and you'll be able to post comments with them. The boat is in nowhere near as bad condition as you first described it. (Is that anything like saying "Your girlfriend is nowhere near as ugly as you said she was?). I think you're going in the right direction with the cleanup. Once it isn't completely disgusting you'll be able to make a much better asessment of what you've got. Again, lots of pictures. This is a great vicarious thrill. Participating in a resurection and it won't cost me a nickle. (THIS time.)

No sailorman ...

I grew up in house, not a barn; though I was exposed to farming and ranching when I was young. I hope it all works out well for you. Ross, I suspect that you wouldn't be exploited either, and that was my point. If you are afraid to look out for your interest because you won't push the envelop and find out where people really stand, then you can be exploited.

Parquet it is (pronounced par-kay).

I too have seen this flooring in a 32' Endeavor and re-varnished it. I loved it. But yours has got to go. All of it. I am not sure why the support 'beams' for the cabin sole are free floating (not tabbed to hull) but perhaps someone else can answer that. I would guess that the sole (flooring or underlayment) is tabbed to the hull and that the floor is meant to flex with the stresses on the hull. Get that shitty, stinky smell out of there. Find the holding tank and empty it in the usual way (pump out), remove and save head (toilet), then get some KO (link: http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|10918|309314|311419&id=888362 ) and allow it to run around a bit in the bilge. I am sure you will find that the smell below gets a lot more pleasant fairly quickly. Add a little clean water with the KO (Kills Odors) so it can cover more area in the bilge. You might want to get the gallon but try the smaller bottle for $12 first and let your nose decide. I stake my reputation (as what?) on this and Peggy the Headmistress on this forum highly recommends this product which is probably available through the chandelry on this website too. Liveability is one of the first things to tackle so you can work on the other things that are way more important like having a working tiller or wheel and some kind of propulsion (I still think your engine might turn over in the right hands). If it stinks and smells sour down there you are not going to be able to spend that much time in there fixing the stuff you need to if you always have to run out for fresh air. Even though this is kind of a Cinderella project (you do need a fairy godmother or at least all of us curmudgeons offering their advice for free) and your boat does not have enough teak and wood on it for me, I want you to succeed. I think that all of the nay-sayers (including myself early on) wish you well from their arm chairs or even while out sailing in your neck of the woods. Keep at it. Good luck.

Denise, Oday 30

You can

get her back to Bristol condition, it's been done thousands of times. The cost to do it can be less taxing doing it at your own pace. Since you're in FLA you will surely become a marine salvage/consignment shopper. Teak veneer plywood for the interior is really not all that expensive when you think about how much you would need to redo a boat. Tanks, plumbing all plastic typical to RVs too. So I encourage you an applaud your enthusiasm. Good luck!

reluctantly commenting

couldn't help stopping at the following point in your description: "Why is the grid system under the floor loose laid? Why not glassed in place like stringers. Why is it 2x4, why is the flooring 1-1/4 inch thick?" and most of us worry about a how to fix a soft spot or debate the disadvantages of a cored hull... this one could give anyone nightmares

Scott, there was a movie a long time ago called

"The Flim-Flan Man" In it the lead character said "you can't cheat an honest man." If you don't try to play an angle and get something you are not entitled to then no one can take advantage of you because fair is fair on both sides.

took that quote out of his "Scene 1 Act 2" post. I'm just a simple sailor but that sounds like a show-stopper to me

Follow up on removing stench.

I forgot to mention that you should pump out any bleach you have used and rinse out the bilge with fresh water before you put in any of the 'KO' (Kills Odors) liquid as harsh detergents like bleach and ammonia kill the active bacteria in it. Also plan on a bit of scrubbing with a stiff bristle brush for a while. It would also be advisable to get some oil absorbent rags used in automotive repair to use for rubbing the hull and/or just soaking in the mix just in case there is engine and other oils in the bilge that stink (http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|10918|309314|311480|812847&id=106252 ) but get them at Auto Zone or similar store. I also suggest that you take a look at this product: http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|10918|309314|311479&id=215468 Getting rid of offensive odors is serious business so you can get on with the rest of your more important tasks. Start here first and move on. I am also unsure why baking soda is not a good air freshener in the cabin of a boat when it is fine to use in the fridge for eliminating odors. More thoughts on Act I., Scene I., exit stage right.

You go Patrick

Patrick, your attitude towards your new boat is what drives most of us as well. I could not have picked up my boat unless I found this deal as well. Sure, i have about 1500.00 into the boat over a year of working on it, but where could I find a boat for that price. I have rewired, new tires on the trailer, new bunks and carpet. I picked up a 1968 Johnson 6hp that purrs like a kitten for 150 bucks. It gets me away from the dock and brings me back in when needed. I usually try to drift away so I don't need the motor but it is nice to have. Your involvement with your sons will be well worth it. My boat had mouse poop, squirrel poop, nests of every animal that could put one there, The transom was a foot under mudd, The black water that was in the hull was the most terrible juice I have ever seen. Fly maggots under the v birth cushions. I cleaned all of the cushion covers at the commercial cleaners. The foam was scrubbed twice with SimpleGreen. You will figure it out and you will enjoy the ride. Good luck. Mac

Patrick,

I might have found you a different boat, Now I'm not trying to talk you out of this here project anymore you are a determined man. So take this for what it is maybe another option is all. Follow the link then Scroll down the page untill you get to the Columbia 34. The Guy does mention "or some one to donate it to". Now my suggustion would be for you to get him to log on and read your threads and show this guy how serious you are and determind, also letting him see how many of us have tried to help you in our different ways either pro or con. He just might give you that boat my friend. and Hay it has 6'3" headroom!!! I'm behind you whatever you do. PS: You just might get a rollerblader to wink at you a little sooner.

Good luck to you, Patrick....

A couple of comments: 1. You wrote: "Hey, maybe i will have a light nimble racer when I'm done????" I'm afraid that isn't likely to happen, no matter what you do - I almost bought an OI33, and my neighbor actually did buy the same boat. He reported that he didn't ALWAYS need the engine to tack..... 2. I read most of the posts in this thread, and didn't find anyone mentioning the hull itself. It's ok to strip the boat to the bare hull and rebuild it all, but have you taken a peek at the hull itself? Consider that these boats were built around '73, when oil prices soared and boat hulls went from thick, solid bullet-proof hunks of fiberglass to thin, cored, and structurally questionable propositions almost overnight. The main problem? Blisters. To make a long story short (yes, I said that!), gelcoat turned out to not be completely waterproof. Over long periods of time, water molecules can pass through it by osmosis. That's not a problem of and by itself, unless the actual fiberglass (layers of fiber impregnated by resin) wasn't carefully assembled, in which case the water invades voids in the fiberglass, reacts chemically with uncured resin and other impurities and viola! you've got blisters. Blisters come in all sizes and levels of severity, and just because a boat has blisters doesn't mean the boat is 'dead' or the owner must pay a small fortune to get the problem fixed..... but sometimes it does. So wouldn't it make sense to spend a few dollars now to find out whether you're putting a whole lot of time and money into a boat that might cost you $10k or more in additional costs? (Blister repair isn't something you could or would want to take on). Other than that, I think you should say 'to hell with the naysayers', enjoy your project, take lots of pictures, and if you have any interest in writing, turn it into a book. :) Cheers, Bob s/y X SAIL R 8

there I was

Minding my own business, when I had a few beers to many....and I put thew greatest movie of all time on...Captain Ron....I laughed my ass of for the 762nd time at this flick. You guys are really funny. I think this would be a perfect opportunity to write a sequel to Captain Ron. We could have the new owner be the son of C' Ron. He gets a boat for free and all these ....others...say "You're going to shoot your eye out!!!" Great opening. Please, I implore you...keep this nonsense going so I can write a script! This is just way to funny for the rest of the world not to see. You guys are priceless.

CHAINPLATES

I HAVE LOOKED AT THE CHAIN PLATES, it has three on each side and on in back. Theye are mearly straps of stainless steel. About 2-1/2 inches wide by about 18 inches long and roughly 3/16 thick. They are bolted through the hull. The only thing i will change is to add stainless backing plates to them. They currently just have washers. They look and feel solid. I can move the upper porthion by pushing and pulling on the shrouds, but the part attached to the hull don't move. H Hey Letterman, I have emailed the guy with the 40 westerbeak diesel engine twice and have not gotton a reply, guess i will call him. The current motor is a 23 hp diesel-perkins i think the po said. Don;t know the condition of it prior to flooding? will ask him today. Maybe I can fog the cylinders, change the oil, and it might crank? That would be even sweeter to have a working diesel in her belly. Then i wouldn't have to spend more money. Maybe i can remove it and rebuild it? i have four or five books on marine diesel upkeep and repair. Was studying in hopes that when i get a boat that uses one, i would have some idea. aLSO, thought maybe i would be diesel repairman to support my cruising habit, kindof gave that up though, I'm 6'4" and some of them compartments are tiny and most are dirty and stinky. the po did say that there were times when he felt the engine wasn't powerful enough, and wanted more. Do bigger motors burn less fuel since they arent working as hard? Is extra horsepower/extra weigh an issue with a boat this size? I know a guy that has a 50hp in his 33oi. Well, today i will get more rotten wood-floor grid system- out of the boat and build some more temp bulkheads, and scrape barrnicles off the keel. I would like to hoist the mainsail today. I need to replace the mainsheet line for sure, just hope the halyiards are good enough. Hav'nt handed them yet. I have turned the main sheeting winches and they turn but alittle sluggish, have books that tell how to clean and rebuild them. When i was a kid i used to tkae things apart to see how they work-when they were broken already, learned alot and had fun with it. hey the boat is very big inside, if i could figure out how to get it through the companionway i might like a sofa and lazyboy rfecliner down there! gonna take some tunes along this am, as well as my circular saw-had to rip plywood with my little jigsaw yesterday. i spent 53$ at lowes yesterday. Tonight i will add up exspenses to date on the "FREE BOAT". Where is the guy with all the boat stuff from chainsawed boats? could use anything, line, spare anchor, engine, electronics, systems, wood, wood, and more wood, has to be cheep though. I had to cash in my vacation time for christmas presents this year. One important reason for this free boat is to get my sons involved with the rebuild. They are pulling away, and doing there own thing now, and don't have much time for dad, when there over to my house they are bored most of the time, i mostly hear from them when they want something-mostly money or help with some repair. So, this boat is big enough i can put the boys on a project and let them have at it. The middle boy-Jesse, said he hates scrapeing the bottom. My oldest is 22 and has'nt worked in over a year, he smokes pot and fails the drug screen, but is too cool to quit in favor of a job.he crashes at his girlfriends or at my ex's, his girlfriend buys his cigs and feeds him I guess. Have a good day all. Patrick
