Just got info from a friend about anengine for the free boat. A yanmar 35 hp for $500. Gonna go check it out at 0900 tomorrow! THe story is it was a running take out from a guys boat that worked for Perkins, or Volvo Penta which gave him a new motor. The guy sold the yanmar to this guy who bought it for a spare for his identicle yanmar35. I don't know about a transmition yet, but i will find out tomorrow. He says he even has a "rebuild" gasket set for it-but it don't need to be rebuilt yet. He is selling it cuz his mechanic told him his current engine don't need to be replaced? He evidently had fuel problems. So, once again i am energized. WE shall see. Is yanmar 35hp a good size for the morgan 33 oi? And are they usually a good motor? Hell, the one i'm replacing is only 23hp. Might get close to hull speed? I already have books on diesels-Nigel Calder, troubleshooting-Compton, and a college text diesel fundamentals-Thiessen.Dales. Nigels book is good reading. But so many variables. Anyway will check replies in am before i go check the motor. Basically i know i need to check if its frozen and has compression. Also, the general appearance-rust. Anything else? How hard and exspensive is it to buy a tranny-used? Patrick

Probably a little more than you need. An engine can be run without being install

Just support it well and be sure that you can kill it. The old tranny may fit.

Patrick, 35HP should be good for your Morgan 33'

(you already knew that) and Caulder talks about Universal and Yanmar engines in his book(s) so it is a respected brand. The fact that the current owner bought it for spare parts is not encouraging and is reflected in the fire sale price. However, one man's junk can be another man's gold, or something like that. If the compression is ok then you might be able to get the old gal working after an overhaul. This could be a parallel side project (the engine) that you work on in your garage while you do other tasks to your free boat. Once the engine is re-built and you have secured a transmission, shaft and prop of your choice, fuel tank, filters and exhaust systems all you will have to do is assemble everything. Sounds simple right? It will take some time and money; there is nothing that can't be fixed by spending more time and money. Some folks here did not think that you would get the boat to it's current 'home' in the first place. I admire your determination and grit and hope that this engine will serve you well - first you will have to serve it well. Ya' really can't argue with the price though, at $500 it is less than 1/10th the cost of a rebuilt engine of comparable HP. The best part is that if you can restore this engine yourself you will know it better than most diesel owners know their own engines. Was there a tranny and shaft on the boat that might be restored? Look for derelict boats in boatyards that have not moved in years. Chances are the boatyard already owns it and would sell it of in parts. As always, good luck.

Run the engine

you can make a workable test stand of 2 X 8 wood in an "H" shape. Lag bolt the mounts to the top edges. Plug in the panel and battery (you really need the panel). Drop a fuel line into a jug of fuel, prime end bleed and crank her up. Assuming it runs the only problem you will likely run into is obsolessence of parts. Yanmar does that on older engines. But with what you've taken on a wee bit of "field expedience" is going to become second nature. As to the amount of work involved? It's your own labor and I don't remember you mentioning any sort set of time table. You knew it was work by about the 50th bucket of crap you carried off. Several of us here, including myself have done engine swaps. You know we can walk you through it.

Yanmars

are arguably the most reliable engine for a small marine diesel.

thanks kalebd

thanks for the torreson link, another link added to favorites. The motor-as i take it was not purchased for spare parts. It was purchased for a replacement motor because the owner was having fuel problems with the installed engine. Too much engine? I have a friend who has an identical morgan 33 oi with a perkins 4-108 at 50 hp. Remember that the outisland weighs in at 15-18k-i think. The po was looking at new westabeake 35d from betamarine. He gave me the sales flyer with specs and price list. I don't know about starting it up in this guys garage? Maybe he will let me play, but i don't know if it comes with the control panel or anything. I mainly posted my possible find to keep everyone informed and to let out my excitement. As i am typeing this it is 0345 in the am. Can't sleep, again too excited-like when i got the boat, and the morning i was to deliver it. I will take my camera and get some pics of the engine and current cond of das boat. Thanks for the replies, I thought that Yanmar was a respected name in marine auxillary power. Parts availability a problem? I had the sme problem with a honda outboard. It was'nt running right so i took it to honda's elite repair facility and paid them $75 to tell me it was electrical and the part was'nt available anymore. I think the motor was a 1980's 8 horse. Gave it to away to somebody.

You can't go wrong with yanmar they are very popular diesel used on many power and sail. My 2007 36 Hunter has a 29 so your 33 will have extra power when needed. Good luck with your boat and you will get plenty of help here as you already know. Nick

When your finished…

Don’t forget to look into re-pitching the prop, or better yet, a new prop. I suspect your old engine has a 2 blade prop. The 35 horse could certainly swing a three bladed prop. You just have to weigh the pro and cons of that choice (more drag under sail, but more power at the prop while motoring. Have to consider how much time is spent under power). Or, if you win the lottery, you could buy a folding three bladed prop. But, at least re-pitching would be in order.
