The REAL Flu!

Hi Roger,

Maybe you had the Real Flu? --that's Flu with a capital F, not the run of the mill viruses common each year that we just call the flu.

My recent experience: I for thefirst time got the Real Flu, and couldn't get out of bed for 10 days--well, except to throw up repeatedly. All that time I couldn't imagine I could make it driving myself to the doctor's, until by day 10 I figured I'd be dying for sure if I didn't!

After that experience, I will always have a bottle of Rx strength nausea/vomit meds with me when cruising or otherwise away from home -- they made the difference for me; that's the only way I stupidly held out for 10 days without going to the ER--which I won't do again. ;)

I'll likely also start getting one of those annual pesky flu shots that I religiously avoided! :D

My wife had e.coli food poisoning. It is different than Salmonella which usually manifests in 6 hours or so. E. coli can take a few days, but is much more serious - even life threatening. In some cases the kidneys fail and it's ballgame-ous. I watched, stupidly, her being violently sick for 2 days before I realized that her condition was severe and not just a bad flu. And on our physician's advice took her to the emergency room. They wanted to do an appendectomy until her ENT doctor noticed her name on a manifest and came in and nixed it. She spent a week in the hospital and while she recovered and there was a period of time where that was not a certainty. The take out lesson is there is some nasty stuff out there and while we probably all hate going to the Dr.'s, and sometimes they are wrong, you can't always just gut it out.

Singlehanded sailing has become problematic in my geezer hood. Gastroenteritis, mini stroke, and a Crohn's event all have occurred while on the boat alone. Yet changing from a singlehander is not easy for me or crew. I have said an rv might be in the cards but cruising is my love still. No ready solution for me.

Hope you are well soon. Hope to see you in SoPo.
