This is the kind of reply Keith needs.
Actually there are some reasons. For the most part it is in the 'sail plan' for the best combination of sails for a given hull design and how the boat will be used.
However, all Keith has to do to grow his understanding is a simple internet search and he might find that his question was asked years ago:
http://www.boatdesign.net/forums/sailboats/masteheaded-vs-fractional-rig-14089.html
or
http://www.kempsails.com/index2.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_view&gid=18&Itemid=12
or
http://www.sailnet.com/forums/sailboat-design-construction/39680-fractional-rig-vs-mast-head-rig.html
I suggest that Keith read and maybe even print out the various discussions and resubmit question as an analysis and summary. He might even begin with a diligent search of this web site, yes?

As long as you are researching things on this site, go to War Room and study the URL posted by Rich H.
