Am reading a good old boat article about the caliber 28. It says that it was offered with the option of a masthead rig or fractional rig. What are the advantages of a fractional rig over a masthead rig?

This is the kind of reply Keith needs.

Actually there are some reasons. For the most part it is in the 'sail plan' for the best combination of sails for a given hull design and how the boat will be used.

However, all Keith has to do to grow his understanding is a simple internet search and he might find that his question was asked years ago:

or

or

http://www.sailnet.com/forums/sailb...on/39680-fractional-rig-vs-mast-head-rig.html

I suggest that Keith read and maybe even print out the various discussions and resubmit question as an analysis and summary. He might even begin with a diligent search of this web site, yes?

Great threads Ed, thanks!

I should have rreaserched it, but I was just wanting to see what you guys thought more than actually getting the physics or mechanics of rigs.
