I had to move and prepare my sailboat for Ivan in a hurry. Due to my haste my Nissan 2003 8hp four stroke got stored for five days horizontally, with the choke and pull start facing up. The manual recommends storing vertically or with the tiller handle on the bottom when stored horizontally. When I put the motor back on its mount I noticed few drips of oil coming from the general area of the lower unit. I managed to get the motor started, but only ran it briefly as it was exhausting from above the water line a bunch of blue smoke. I assume oil seeped into the cylinder, and would like any info on what to do to the motor beyond changing lower unit and motor oil, and flushing the cooling lines. Can I just run the motor to burn the oil out of the cylinder?

Sure, run it

I would take out the spark plugs and spin the engine real good using the starting cord. This will spit much of the excess oil out of the top of the cylinders. Since you have already run it briefly, there may not be too much left. Then I would put the plugs back in and run the thing at a high idle until the smoke is cleared. Then check the plugs again to see if they have any oil build up, as you may need to clean them. Then go boating, cuz we probably won't get another hurricane for a few days. Enjoy :) Regards, Ted

Agree with Ted

You've probably already burned most of the oil up. The smoking will stop pretty quick - remember, just a tiny bit of oil in the combustion chamber will create a LOT of smoke. No damages done....

The previous owner delivered my Mac with the O/B on it's wrong side in the cockpit. It started right up and then the world turned blue. It looked like a smurfy fog had settled on the marina. Thankfully it was early on a work-day and few saw a smoke screen that would have made 007 proud.
