Found some goodies under the forward section of sole! What are they?

Okay... I can see that one is a P79 transducer (the boat came with a new one... guess he was going to replace it?), next to it.... I'm not sure what that is.
Over on the other side all by her little ole lonesome is the lady-in-red... my knotmeter... right?
.
I'm currently working on the DC system... which if you look at the 2 pics of the wiring I found there illustrate the quality of work some earlier 'boat 'lectrician' graced this poor little Hunter with (I think I found his picture... looks like the attitude I'd expect for such a Pro! with his loose wire nuts, bare wires, poor butt connections, and rolls of tape! ;) ).

So while rewiring my boat, I'm thinking I'll inspect these little gizmos too.
Suggestions on checking them out for function without the boat leaving the slip? I might be able to convince my girlfriend to dive under the hull and blow into the knotmeter to spin the little wheel... or knot...
.
Thanks!

The through hull next to your depth sounder is probably a thermometer. Do you have a meter that reads temperature? I believe your correct about the paddle wheel transducer for the knotmeter. Take the boat out for a spin and see if the gauges match up with SOG from a GPS device like a smart phone. Messing around with through hulls while in the water can be done, but it's fairly wet and un-nerving to perform.

You should have a plug for the paddle wheel. This enables you to pull and clean the sensor without going under the hull. The first time is a bit unnerving seeing a 1.5" hole with water coming in. But with a bit of practice you get maybe a cup or two.

I have not had the courage to try it yet.
I say... Go for it. Just go for it.... Be sure you are wearing a PFD and your bathing suit... It is all about swapping. Think Indiana Jones...

the red one is certainly your knotmeter, based on the bail to pull it out alone. as was said, you should have a plug so you can pull it and clean it while the boat's in the water. the black one that's in the other thru hull is probably the original depth guage sender. the second sender is probably a replacement after the original failed. It's bedded in a glob of caulk, a common mounting method for shoot-thru senders which usually work fine mounted that way.

Thanks everyone!
Plug... you mean the standard wooden plug?
I have a few of different sizes all in a drawer... PO never thought to have them secured near each through-hull ;)

If it's a different kind of plug... I ain't got it.

Sounds COOL! Pulling the knotmeter and having just a hole into the bay!.... wait.... this is MY boat.. not mom & dad's... hmmmm.... eh.... still sounds exciting!
.
Can I substitute a wetsuit for a swimsuit? Water is still kinda chill up here in NorCal!

THANKS FOR THE GRAPHIC!
I do better with pictures!

So... tomorrow morning, before I leave for the boat... I'll go out in the yard and grab a BIG sandbag to bring with me... ;)

No not a wood plug It would look just like the paddle wheel except have flat bottom and no wires. I would use a foam plug rather than wood if you pull it

Les has it ... it looks something like this

The second plug tied to the transducer fits in the hole when you pull the transducer for cleaning.

One other note to consider. The original paddle wheel through hull on the older Hunters had a keyed slot with mating guide on the outer diameter of the paddle wheel insert. This was an alignment guide which assured that the paddle wheel was inserted perpendicular to water flow while underway. I was fortunate to have my boat on the hard when I changed mine out with new, rather than just cleaning the old. Several of the paddles and one magnet was missing on mine, caused by a lift strap slipping during take out the year before.

The replacement paddle wheel was a PITA to insert, taking several attempts at blindly matching the alignment guide to the slot in the through hull. I'm convinced that had I been on the water, that the cabin would have been flooded with much more than a cup of water. So let's be careful out there. Video for viewing pleasure attached:

THANKS for the video!
I'll keep my eyes open when I get back to the boat today... but I've been all through it and never seen a plug for this.
I should also call the PO.... he did say he had a few items in his garage still he was going to pass on to me... maybe stuff like the plug are in that box?
.
Thankfully... this is in an area I can easily work with 2 hands!
Mop up shouldn't be too bad either... long as I get things swapped quickly... like you say! hahaha

So I'm going to do some research on the Signet displays at the helm and see if I can still use these... would want to still use these... or need to pull them and replace?

If you have a chart plotter. Pull display and connect existing paddle wheel to either NMEA 0183 or NMEA 2000.

Also everyone should pull the paddle wheel before being lifted out of the water. Operators have no idea where they might be when in the water but seem to put the straps on them 95% of the time

The paddle wheel can maybe be tested by a length of rope dropped over the bow and worked back to the wheel by someone on each rail (you can floss the hull as you do this.. ). Someone watch the display while one or two move the rope fore and aft over the wheel. It shouldn't take much speed to move the wheel enough to make the display show something.

Signet is still in business and can re-hab the instruments for you at a good price.. http://www.signetmarine.com/
If ya want new and networked, then pull them.. I guess I am a bit of a Luddite since I don't see a need for all the networked BS on a cruising sailboat moving at 6-7 miles per hour..
