Looks like my new design forward hatch can be opened from inside, or outside. Must admit though that I've never physically tried it.

Don,
Hmmm... I've seen those exact latches in my parts hunt. Can't remember who made them. For some reason I'm thinking it's not actually Bomar.
Something similar to that would be the best idea, if the shaft area where if goes through the glass could be extended to the thickness of the fibreglass hatch. Opens from both sides, and the cam action would pull it tight.

Too bad all the info I've read says the hatch itself won't fit. Once day I'll have to measure your or Gene's boat and see how much fiberglass work would be needed. hehe

oh the spacer isn't a worry I'll fabricated whats needed or lay up fiberglass if needed anyway that can be done.

Let me say this after I cut the damn holes it WILL fit I just hope it doesn't go the way of my anchor windlass.

The project that sounded easy in my head and turned into a nightmare project that would have scarred freddy cruger hehe

Anyway they are ordered it's all gonna work just a matter of how much of a pain in the arse it's gonna be.

Another thought I had is after I cut my holes the non skid around the hole need ground off to make a good seal. Small thing but would make a mess if forgotten :)

Don

I am about 99% sure you couldn't open that from outside unless you removed the latch that's on the inside. (not hard I'm assuming)

But looking at the handle you have a thumb button that you have to push in order to twist the handle couldn't do that from outside.

They are made for what 99% of the people would want and that's the ability to lock your boat up when your not there.
That's just not an issue for me.

I also think they do all of it because 99% of the boats out there that have hatches are setup that the hatch would be like a foot from the edge of the bed away from the bed so you can walk up to it and open the hatch from inside.

Just boils down to the fact that I don't want to crawl on my back to open the hatch.
Being able to open from the outside gives me the ability to jump down the hatch from the front without going around to open it as well. (be nice when working on things.

Oh well it's gonna work cause I say its gonna work hehe Where there is a will there is a way and once I cut the holes well then there is a will, there is a way, and there are 2 big holes leaking into the boat

@ Don - Well I'll be darned, look at that will ya!. My bet is, it DOES open from the outside, unless the dogs are previously locked in some way from the inside. There would be no point in outside handles otherwise.

Why would they need to lock at all, if the hatch could not be opened from the outside?

Looks to me like they're dogged down but not locked in the first photo. To lock them, I'm guessing, you would slide that 'thumb switch' outward, engaging the gray tab above it into the barrel of the mechanism.

I was pretty much assuming that when the dogs are fully engaged there was a spring in the thumb switch that engaged into a detent locking the gray tab on the barrel of the mechanism. :)

I only say this because most of the other similar products I've seen not by same company but just similar stuff on campers and such.

Sorry to keep you all in suspense, but we're in Florida, we're here house hunting, but I also received a summons to serve as a character witness for Gene. So I'll check it out sometime next week when we return to San Diego.

Incase you were wondering this is the thickness of the hatch at the edge It would have 99% chance been just fine with one latch but I was just to chicken.

Looks great ! Nice job.

Thanks for the thickness photo. I'm still hoping to find a suitable a slam latch, and that may help me find one with the right thickness spacer.

oh yah forgot to mention that I used the plate from the original dogs. Would have probably been a little further out of the way had I put in a new plate and put it half way up would have hid the bolt at the end completely.

AND let me add that I had literally ZERO extra shaft on the dog meaning had anything been thicker I would have been screwed or had to put the plate up like I said above.

OH and the thickness of the hatch is WAY OVER thickness for what the dogs are made for. I had to modify things a bit cause they don't stick threw the door.

Just be warned from what I found none of them hardly are made for that thick of a door. It worked like a charm what I got but it was by a hairs breath like it was made for it (after modifications hehe) so measure 3 times before buying or cutting.

I am way sorry for resurrecting this thread BUT have a kind of big update. They leak. They leak like I put a damn pipe threw the deck threw the shaft.

I didn't post anything till I thought I had a solution.

Called the company they are sending me another set of dogs that are a big upgrade from what I have but they are not compression I'll have to make a ramped striker which shouldn't be to hard.

They apparently had no idea they would leak like they do and I was on the phone with there engineer and sales people for quite awhile about the problem.

ok this is for leeward. I know you wanted a suitable slamlatch or that's what your thinking anyway. Well needless to say I was pissed off about the above (should have checked first it's my fault but still pissed)

Anyway as far as a slamlatch 99.9% of them will not guarantee waterproof latch. ONE will guarantee (trust me I've spent way to much on this simple project calling and checking) and the winner for slam latch guaranteed waterproof is........drumroll......
http://www.five-oceans.com/articulo/flush-lift-slam-latch-waterproof-ss-316-diamerter-62mm/2062

anyway I contacted them and they verified it's waterproof and guarantee that it is completely waterproof.

SOOO if you want a slamlatch there ya go.

I'm still not really wanting a slam latch simply cause I want to be able to compress the hatch but it would most likely work great

Ugh, Lots of work !
It least you now know the answers to what we wondered about.
I'm very glad they had a solution for you. It would have been ugly otherwise.
Are the new ones the same depth and diameter ?
Do they list them online ?

Thanks for the awesome info on the slam latches.
