I have looked at the specs for my 1984 31H. I think I am stupid because the letter designations I don't understand. what is the length of the forestay? I am considering a roller furling. and I need to know the length. Paul

The specs on your head sail

say 32'7". For a furler you need to measure distance from pin to pin. Due to the age of your boat would strongly recommend the replacement of the forestay wire. Hold the mast up with a sling and a halyard and drop[ the forestay for measurements. Get a furling unit adequate for the size and displacement of the boat. Follow the manufacturers install instructions.

Measure it!

Paul: I would suggest that you measure it. I think that the actual measurement is something like 40'. You normally will not need an exact measurement, the foil will need to be cut to fit. If you get a 50' tape you can either hoist it up on the jib halyard for an estimate or have someone hoisted up the stick to hold the tape. What type of furler are you considering?

I Like CDI Flexible Furler

I have owned a 22 catalina, a 27 catalina and I have always had amazing results with the Flexible furler. The warranty is one of the best. I have crewed on other boats with other furles and I have found that CDI furler points better into the wind. I would reccomend it to anyone. Quality, Warranty, Performance and Value. It has it all! CDI would not be my choice but....

The CDI units are "ok" if you intent is just to store the jib, but my experience with our CDI is mediocre at best.

Went to the boat show

I went to the boat show for this very same reason. Talked to all the manuf people, looked at all the equip, talked to the sail makers. All said something different. It's all what you prefer, how it is installed and make sure the unit is big enough to handle what you want it to do. Clif

Listen to Benny

He makes a very good point about replacing the headstay. If you don't know how old it is, replace it(they have a working life of 10 years). Loosing a headstay while sailing is no fun and can get folks hurt(or killed). It's cheap compared to the alternative. ;)

H31 Forestay

Margaritaville, I don't know if you have measured your forstay yet, but I will be measuring mine within the next couple of days. You have to replace your forestay because of age and, depending on which furler you get, you would have to cut the bottom terminal off to get the furler on anyway. I have a Harken Unit that works great after 23 years on the boat, but it has a couple of kinks in the upper extrusions due to damage during moving (previous owner didn't disclose this to me and I didn't catch it until I tried to pull the jib down) I'm going to have to take the forestay down and cut off the bottom terminal, so I'm replacing the forestay along with the extrusions and connectors with an up-grade kit. Let us know if you still need that forestay measurement and what furling unit you are planning on going with. I talked to a Tom at Rigging Only that was very helpful about my problem. I think I will have them make up a new headstay, I haven't found out about price yet. Let me know if you have any prices on headstays etc... Thanks !
