So I've decided to abandon the roller furler and go to hanked on sails.
So get this, I ordered the sta-lock fittings, wire, turnbuckles and a
new (used) working jib, plus wire cutters for less than the riggers I
talked to wanted for coming up to Baltimore and replacing the stay in
the roller furler!

For cutting wire (including 1 by 19 SS), a Dremel tool with cut off wheel works really well, and you get a very useful tool for less money than a big wire cutters. I used the Dremel on my recent lifeline replacement and it worked great.Nicholas Walsh

I want to replace the double forestay that I inherited with a single forestay, and I have the mast off the boat. But now I have doubts about the accuracy of the measurement I took when the mast was in place. Does anyone know the length of the forestay? ( I can't use the measurement of one of the doubles because they are shorter) Thanks.

Hi Craig,

I replaced the forestay on my series 1 last year and the measurment was 31' 9 1/4" This is pin to pin and I ran the forestay from the stem up to the aft hole on the crane. I used 1/4 1x19 wire with sta lok fittings.

If you go with swageless fittings, like sta lok, you can fasten the top to the mast and then support the mast with a halyard and cut the forestay to the length required by your turnbuckles etc. I replaced mine with the mast down, but then I could measure off of the old stay.
