Forestay Woes

Terminal Fittings-Advice Requested
OK, now I'm planning my repair/replacement. After I shorten my furler, I plan on adding a toggle on the upper end of the forestay between the T-Ball terminal fitting and above the point where the forestay enters the furler. The easiest way would be to find a T-Ball fitting with an eye bottom (similar to a T-Ball running back fitting) and connect the eye to the toggle, but I can't find such a fitting. Would a T-Ball running back work? My second option is to go with a T-Ball swaged fitting onto a very short length of wire rope and connect to a swageless toggle and then connect to a swageless eye. The first option would be simpler and less expensive (one less swageless fitting). I would very much appreciate your advice and opinions. Any other options? Thanks, BrianW

Probably, if you're very careful... however, taking the furler apart would make it a lot easier, and you could check all the parts to see if any needed replacing or repairing.

Read or find online your furler maker's instructions. My forestay started to twist when I first tried it. The previous owner had not installed it correctly. My instructions specified a specific angle of the halyard to the forestay. A metal tunnel was included to put the halyard in the right place. See the picture. If the halyard and the forestay are parallel then the forestay will twist. I also think your furler tube is too long.

My H260 uses a CDI furler. You can see there is much more room between the T-ball and the head of the furler. If it was shorter I could see how the forestay could get crimped/twisted.
When the T-ball worked loose on my mast I had it replaced. It was surprisingly cheap.
After talking to Hunter and US Spars I was referred to Seco South 727-536-1924 in Largo FL to have it evaluated. The new forestay was $32, a new slot was a whopping $25 !!

Very nice people to work with over the phone. I sent the the old forestay and I got my new forestay back in a couple of weeks.
As others have recommended, you might want to shorten the foil.
This winter I'm probably going to have a hound fitting installed to replace the slot/t-ball. That probably help reduce the possibility of the t-ball ever working loose again. At least one Hunter rep admitted to me that the t-ball/slot setup is not really the best option for trailer sailors and that it works best for hank-on jibs.
