August 10, 1984, 3:30 AM rounding a corner on our way out of Salt Lake City on dark wet I84, I slammed on my brakes to avoid a sailboat laid across the road in the most precarious manner. This result was jack-knifing the car I was towing. I didn't sail at the time so I just thought it was rude! Leaving a boat like that! Seriously, that's a . . . caution, if not a fear, that we carry every time. My boat is about 5500 lbs on the trailer, more than enough to flatten a Prius. While towing, we're 49' long, stem to stern; almost as long as a semi-trailer. I tow it through town, busy traffic. Last year, I hit the breaks a little harder than normal (misspelling intended). When I looked in the mirror, there was my boat, 40' behind. The trailer hitch had given up the ghost. These are things that happen to us poor saps. Give me a soft grounding any day.
