August 10, 1984, 3:30 AM rounding a corner on our way out of Salt Lake City on dark wet I84, I slammed on my brakes to avoid a sailboat laid across the road in the most precarious manner. This result was jack-knifing the car I was towing. I didn't sail at the time so I just thought it was rude! Leaving a boat like that! Seriously, that's a . . . caution, if not a fear, that we carry every time. My boat is about 5500 lbs on the trailer, more than enough to flatten a Prius. While towing, we're 49' long, stem to stern; almost as long as a semi-trailer. I tow it through town, busy traffic. Last year, I hit the breaks a little harder than normal (misspelling intended). When I looked in the mirror, there was my boat, 40' behind. The trailer hitch had given up the ghost. These are things that happen to us poor saps. Give me a soft grounding any day.

Freaking long boat behind a comparatively tiny jeep. Slightly off on the tongue weight and . . . oops. :(

Trailering should be conducted at reduced speeds from posted limits and general traffic. The German Autobahn with no speed limits and high rates of speeds is not the best road to trailer in.

We worry more about the question of "will my little mighty mite SUV pull my mid size boat and trailer?"than "how the hell will I stop it". When you can see the bow sprit hanging over the windshield your in the wrong rig.
