I've learned to have a thick skin being on this forum since not all like what I post. I already know there are some who think this was a terrible idea. But, here goes. On our previous 2 cruising boats, we had a folding main salon table, which I really liked. So, when we bought our current boat in Nov 2009, the first thing we did was remove the fixed main salon table. The fixed table made getting around the main salon a pain. It took months to find someone willing to tackle this project. He used the main salon table that we removed and made a folding table out of it (see pics). It isn't exactly what I wanted, but close. I wanted the shelves deeper, but the guy was concerned about the weight since a pocket door is behind the table, so it was difficult to secure it with big bolts.
