I've learned to have a thick skin being on this forum since not all like what I post. I already know there are some who think this was a terrible idea. But, here goes. On our previous 2 cruising boats, we had a folding main salon table, which I really liked. So, when we bought our current boat in Nov 2009, the first thing we did was remove the fixed main salon table. The fixed table made getting around the main salon a pain. It took months to find someone willing to tackle this project. He used the main salon table that we removed and made a folding table out of it (see pics). It isn't exactly what I wanted, but close. I wanted the shelves deeper, but the guy was concerned about the weight since a pocket door is behind the table, so it was difficult to secure it with big bolts.

Hi Mary, One suggestion to carry the weight is to use 1x1" strips the whole length of the selves. These could be inside so not to be noticeable. Screws could be put ever inch if you wanted ,that and glue and it would hold a ton. Also it looks as though it is sitting on a foot to the sole, so you really only need it to stop from tipping off the bulkhead not carry the weight. Of course the bulkhead might not be thick enough to carry the ton. Greg

No "right" answers to this....
I have been on a ton of boats with fold up tables and I love the way the cabin center is opened up. 'Sides, when under way, you usually eat out of bowls on your lap anyway, 'cause plates n cups n silverware just slide off the table with every roll.

And then there's the strength issue. Very very few foldable tables are really solid when down.

We have a boat with a center table with fold-down leaves. Solid as a rock with thru-bolts into the sole and a bracket into the slot on the rear of the mast. But...... you always have to decide which side you're going around to walk forward!
Being strong, at least ours can hold against a lurching human in a seaway and does serve as a hand hold.

The extra storage you gained is wonderful as well.

Again, your design looks great! Congrats!

Just Love It

I also saw a few boats with the fold up table but liking Hunters, decked stepped mast our 2 Hunters had the stainless support pole right down the middle of the saloon table so no way to do the folding table for us.
I am always thinking of ways to move this very big table but never have seen any other mods that we liked and so thinking and thinking is all we can do for now.
I think it is great and best idea and maybe see you guys soon, say hello to Bill and go easy.

Really nice. I love my boat but one thing I miss is dark wood. I always love the darker woods, especially when it is freshly done. I have a friend who has an Erikkson that is absolutely classy. Your's is beautiful!

Early 9.2A's like mine have a table that stows in the quarter berth. There are two metal pedestals that fit into mounts in the sole / table. I must say that for my purposes it really suits as I have not had the table up once for use in four years and it really opens up the cabin. We usually eat at the cockpit table.

I have a folder on my computer called "idea pictures". I stored your pics there for future reference. Thanks for posting.

Bob: Happens there was a recent thread on the Cherubini forum that possibly might be off interest. Could you use only one of the metal pedestals to support a smaller table? If so, the cabin might still feel open with the smaller table foot-print. And something in place all the time is convenient.

Go immediately to the opening post -- I caused the thread to go off topic later on.

It looks great -- and if you like it, certainly don't worry about what other people think of your choices about your ship : ) !

Quite similar to the table and dish cabinet that we have. I used several hinges as "L" brackets to fasten the shelves to the bulkhead.

I am looking for ideas to join the two bunks in the gallery on my 1982 Hunter 25, so that it will turn into a large bed overnight. I would love any information on utilizing the hanging saloon table or removable supports to accomplish this.
