Flush mounting a Horizon CP190i

Fellow Sailors. Everyone on this forum is extremely helpful in sharing their wisdom and experience. I am getting ready to install a new chartplotter on my CAT 270. I want to flush mount a Standard Horizon CP190i chartplotter in a plastic NAV POD at the top of my helm. The manufacturer states an external antenna "may" be needed if this device is flush mounted. I am thinking since the case is plastic and at most there will only be a bimini between the case and the sky this may not be a problem. Does anyone have a similar setup? If so what, if any issues did you encounter? As always all wisdom welcome and appreciated.

Thanks!

-Steve

Strongly suggest you not flush mount. If you can swivel and tilt, you will always be able to read the screen. If you flush mount, reflections off the water as well as direct sunlight will render the screen unreadable at times.

Will your flush mount chartplotter remain on the boat then? I am going to rig mine on the helm too but will mount it so I can still tilt and swivel it.....and most importantly, to remove it when not in use. I figure a high dollar chartplotter will get gone real quick if left on the boat.

Here what I did on my C30. Couldn't find a pod sized for the Raymarine a65 so I bought an weather resistant plastic component box from Newark electronics. The internal GPS works just fine and I mounted it so it swivels 360 degrees.

Thanks Doug. That is what I was hoping for. If you can get GPS inside that enclosure located under your instrument pod I am sure I will be fine. Thanks for your response.

As far as security is concerned I am more comfortable with securing it on the NAV POD rather than having to worry about remembering to remove it every time I leave the boat, even for a short time. Swivel mounted devices are just too easy to steal.

That one I do not know. The CP190i that I have does not have the depth option. You can try Standard tech support at 800-767-2450. Be prepared to be on hold for a while but they will answer your question. I will defer to other members who may know better.

I am by no means an expert in this subject. I would strongly recommend contacting the manufacturer before buying anything. Do you have the CP190 or the CPF190? The CPF190 can directly support a transducer but it is a direct connection, not networked. If you have to connect something via NMEA0183 you will need the black box. Before making that investment get your set up approved by the manufacturer (Standard) so you have some recourse and support if things do not work. Also try to get everything from the same manufacturer and have them certify that everything you specifically want to do will work the way you envision it to. That is what I did before I purchased anything. I was at the fuel dock one day behind a large 40 plus foot blue water cruiser that had a helm that looked like the bridge of the Enterprise. I asked him about AIS and the owner told me he invested heavily in AIS equipment 6 months ago and NO ONE has yet been able to make his N2K stuff communicate with the AIS gear. And it was not like this man had money issues. The bottom line is just be careful and do not think that something will work just because the stuff shares the same networking protocol. Best of Luck.

Should have looked at the specs first. The CP190i is a chartplotter only. The CPF190i includes the fishfinder.
