Those of you who have read mostl of these posts know that I have arrived several times. I’d reached my “destination” in Elizabeth City, NC; Saint Marys was the end of the journey; etc. A continuing sense of arriving is one of the most rewarding things about this life.

Nowhere yet though has that intoxicating Wow-I’m-here, feeling been stronger than just now watching the sunset in a cove just north of Jacksonville with industry on one side (along with the zoo which has its own dock), funky marinas on the other, and a few derelict boats anchored just inshore. It’s not a particularly appealing spot but the little guy in my head keeps yelling, “It’s Florida!” Maybe it’s just a lifetime of conditioning to think of the state as a land of milk and honey with an endless summer.

The air is different though. Forty five minutes before sunset, it was 80 degrees and it had only dropped a couple when the sun reached the horizon under a few clouds. The wind is light and balmy but there were beautiful days all along. I can’t fully account for the feeling that this is what is outside the far end of the long tunnel of the ICW. Like I said, it is probably just the result of a lifetime of exposure to advertising and cultural myth.

The fog obviously lifted since my last post. The visibility comfortably exceeded the distance between day beacons just at high tide. The next high tide would not be as high so I picked my way very carefully out of the river and into the main channel. By the time I reached the public dock and free pump out just above the bridge where Sister Creek joins the Saint John River, it was tee shirt hot under clear skies.

I just had the first lines made fast when a young fellow came down the dock with a big smile on his face. It took me a moment to realize that it was my first employee. I’m used to people I haven’t seen in 20 years being surprisingly old but he was young enough that he still looks young. He works at the shipyard just across the bridge and was watching the SPOT. He and his wife live in near Green Cove Springs, my destination tomorrow, so we decided to get together there.

After pumping out the holding tank, I went through the bridge into the river. I love port cites and Jacksonville is a refreshing change from the miles and miles of coastal marshlands. I’m anchored in a large open area where I don’t need two anchors because of current or to be sure I don’t drift over a shoal. Tomorrow, I’ll pass through the city and then into an entirely different kind of waterway.

I still don’t have any ambitions to go farther down the ICW when I return to it from Green Cove Springs. I’ll probably turn left back towards Georgia and begin the slow trip north but I’ve changed my mind before.

Ah, and I'd bet he said, "Gee, Roger, you haven't changed at all either - you look great!"

I'll be good. Those temps just mean fewer bugs and more hot water because I can run the cabin heater.

I'm anchored inside a small island across from the city waiting for the 1130 railroad bridge opening. I've had a walk ashore and thought more about Florida on the run up the river.

I visited Florida a lot one winter in the 70's to see a girlfriend and came down frequently in the 80's and early 90's on business. It was wonderful to step out of the airline terminal into that balmy warmth with my shoes and socks still damp from the melting snows of New England. I hadn't traveled as much then and the state seemed incredibly exotic. I have many fond memories that had gotten overlaid with the passage of time and all that was triggered last night.

Being in cruised planning mode, what has been more present in my mind was remembering looking at the ICW with its mansions and powerboats and thinking that it didn't look like a very nice place to cruise. I liked it but sort of in the way I like Vermont.

Another thing I remembered is that I don't think I have ever been as cold as I was in Florida. I didn't bring proper clothes, the houses didn't have heat and those glass louvered windows that let the northers blow in one side and out the other. I've got my big cabin heater now and should be good for anything that the state has seen since the ice age.

I hear you loud and clear. After resisting for many of the same reasons you stated (I had relatives in south Florida) I moved to central Florida 19 years ago and was surprised to find a lot of the state still undeveloped. Not only that, but many places still haven't changed all that much despite the frantic development that has taken place since I've been here. Apart from a few narrow canals to connect the broad lagoons behind the barrier islands, the ICW actually isn't that bad until you get down to the "concrete canyons" in Palm Beach County. The St. Johns River is also a treasure.

Especially if you like helicopters:) There must be a half dozen of them out there now night training. Good thing I used to be a pilot and have positive feelings about flight training.

It really is a great place. I sailed about half of it today and am anchored in Green Cove Springs. I've walked around, bought some things, and am going to hang out here until I get a wind that will give me a great sail back to Jacksonville.

Great little town and the spring is very cool.

Hang around a bit, Roger, it's way too early to head North!

Roger, we were near you tonight having dinner at singletons shrimp shack across the river at the may port ferry. The helicopters are not training- they are security for the may port naval facility, home to a major battle group including nuclear powered cruisers but no carrier anymore. I think they are doing touch and go flights over the base and st johns river 24/7. Lots of noise with two of them in the air all the time. Welcome to Florida.

Pilots are always training. The maneuvers I watched on the way down were clearly practice. Even though they have a security mission and are out of "flight school", they probably spend a significant portion of their flight time practicing.

Is there a place I an anchor and row ashore to that shrimp shack? I need some destinations in the area.

I really wish I had measured my mast more carefully. The bridge is 45 and 47 to the tip of my VHF antenna (which would flex) is the number I keep in my head for bridges but I can't remember if that is with a safety factor or not. Maybe I could turn off the VHF and try it carefully:)

you sound like a vacation comercial Roger

Ah yes, the "magic" that is Florida! For me it was instilled early in the 70's when on vaca with the folks. We came down to visit my grandparents who snowbirded down here from MI. The farm sat empty and the fields were resting under a blanket of snow. Seems to change when you cross the border- the visitors center was a pure eden with free orange juice and all those torrist flyers to exotic traps, cypress gardens, weeki watchy springs, and of course disney. But the real magic is in its tropical waters and ecclectic seaside establishments and serenity. THe old days there were alot of mom and pops around but high taxes and insurance has made it very hard for them to stay in buisness. All too many have vanished to be replaced by bigger and more exspensive marinas and such. Hell. i don't every recall seeing "high and dry" marinas in the distant pass. But, if you poke around like your doing you will undoubtedly find your nirvana around some bend in the river.
You have a tentative schedule for this trip? Too bad, you could just go werever your bow takes you otherwise. As far as staying warm with your cabin heater, well my question to you is WHY! Nice you have the ability to stay warm but as you trvel farther south the nightime low temp are warmer and warmer. And in a short time the northern fronts won't make it down this far and the weather is perfect. Flowers bloom, water warms to swimming temps, people are out and about, etc. Your choice. Thanks for the travel plug and your posts.

Perhaps something to do with security preps for the R debate scheduled for Jacksonville tomorrow? Watch out for inflatable gun boats on the river:D

Too Bad

It's too bad we keep telling everyone how great it is down in Florida for northerns to escape the cold weather and so it is getting so crowded here during the winter but everyone runs like hell back up north when the heat and bugs appear.
I came down to Florida when we retired from NY to escape higher taxes and just higher cost for everything and more sailing time and now my wife is so happy here its hard to get her to leave for visiting family up north.
So tell everyone how great the east coast of Florida is,enjoy the warm weather while you are visiting.
