floor varnish

Does anybody know what Pearson used as a "varnish" on the floors? I need to refinish them & don't want to use something that will interact badly w/ what's there.

You are unlikely to encounter interaction problems. Just prep it well, good sand and maybe wipe with denatured alcohol before laying your first coat. I would not sand beyond 150. As an alternative you could take the old finish off completely and use an oil finish like teak oil instead. Not near as glossy but you won't slip when you come down with wet feet either...

Hey, Andrew, If your floor is only needing a cleaning see Ultimate Sole for their cleaner and mirror finish, non-slip coating. I used them 6yrs. ago on my teak and holly sole in a 190 Hunter 33 and it got lots of abuse while racing but all I needed to spruce it up was a damp cloth and see my face in it. The new owner loves it. I just redid my flooring in my new '87 Pearson 39-2 and it looks like I just put a mirror over the top of it except for the fuel oil stains from the PO. Preparation of the wood (sanding it should not be needed) by using TSP and a 3M green pad should be all the preparation you should need, then follow the Ultimate Sole directions. I guarantee you and everyone seeing your job will love it.
