Flag - What to do?

I have a 30' Catalina and want to put an flag holder on the stern. Most of the ones that I saw that can hold a flag large enough mean drilling holes in the hull. As a first-time boat owner I'm sorta reluctant to drill holes in the hull. Any recommendation from anyone on what to do or what to buy? Thanks, Larry

Clip on to stern rail

There is a fixture that clamps onto the stern rail. I've seen it at WM and BU/S. You don't need to drill into the hull. Roc

Flag

On TASHTEGO there is a small block attached on the backstay and a flag halyard which ties off to the stern railing. Traditionally the flag was raised to the peak of a gaff rigged sail. Part way up the backstay is the closest approach with a jib headed sail. Using the backstay requires no holes at all.

Clip on Stern Rail

I've seen the clip for the stern rail, but it seems to only be for smaller flags. Do you know of a larger one available? Thanks, Larry

Larger one???

How big of a flag are you flying??? The clip (or clamp I should say) that I have seen can handle a flag staff anywhere from 24" to 48" long. It clamps to the rail and the staff slides into the mounting holes. I think it's made by a company called Johnson. BTW, the correct size flag for a boat is 1" per foot, so you need a 30" flag. Go to next size up if none are available in that length. Roc

Flag holders.....

My plastic, rail-mounted clamp style holder worked okay till I lost the whole flagpole and flag on a blustery day. I chose to install a backstay flag halyard which I think looks very, very cool. But I also love the rich traditonal look of a teak flagpole. Either way, displays the national ensign splendidly while sailing. Look through all the marine catalogues first, if you still need to cut a hole, so be it(they say it's not really your boat till you cut a hole in it). A sailboat just isn't complete without a place to display old glory properly.

TASHTEGO is a Catalina 27 built in 1979. Tashtego was a character in Moby Dick.

Flag - what to do? Response

I agree that holes in the hole should be minimized. You could use hose clamps to attach a longer pole to the stern rail. Also, a lot of boats now fly a flag off the backstay. This just requires spring loaded clips. Hope this helps.

Drill

Drilling holes in the transom to mount a nice, quality flag holder shouldn't deter you. Over the course of your ownership you'll probably do a fair amount of drilling as you acquire new equipment. The transom is probably one of the safest places to drill. Just do it carefully and use a good marine caulking. Be sure to use a caulk that will allow removal in the future. Also, make sure the flag holder is high quality stainless or bronze so it doesn't corrode over time. Just don't near your fuel tank vent or propane tank vent so as to avoid drilling into the vent hose.
