Hi John,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, reflections and experiences with all of
us. Many people don't get beyond pondering about a journey like you have
done and at the end regret they never executed their plan. Congratulations
to you and I look forward to read you blog, book or diary in whatever
format.

Hi John

Just found a nice little bottle of malt that needs an excuse to be opened... I have the lamp we can swing, table to sit round and two crystal glasses with oodles of ice....

Hi John. Add me to the list of many who will buy your book if you choose to write one. Most of us who have gone on extended cruises in our Vegas have experienced similar frightening and amusing situations, but most never get around to putting it all together in book form. Hope you do, as you have a way with words! Am so glad you have decided not to sell Cirrus in haste, something I feel you would later regret. Most cruisers are not enamored of long passages, rather they do it in order to gunk hole and coastal hop, taking their home along with them. Don't know whether you would be able to get to the next International Friendship Regatta in 2014, but I suspect that is something you would enjoy immensely.

Smooth Sailing,

Hey, Steve, learned what a chinwag was from watching the Summer Olympics. Knew a lot of British slang having been a Beatlemaniac and from watching a lot of British shows on public television, but chinwag was a new one for me!

Hi Melanie... thankyou so much for your kind words, Cirrus has been
lifted out and is sat in a cradle in the yard on this rock in the
Atlantic and I feel safe for the first time since I left Widnes....
daft I know but that is honestly how I feel - it is wonderful to be on
beautiful solid ground! My appetite is back and I even went for a
swim in the sea which proves I am in a holiday mood... I really need
to have a good think about this because it is so weird. I am pretty
sure I have been worried about things breaking and my lack of
experience since leaving the UK. My father was injured and 2 of my
uncles were killed at sea (fishing trawlers out of Fleetwood) when I
was young and I wonder if I have a deep rooted fear of water!! :) (it
is ok with whiskey!)
The psychology of it all evades me at the moment and I am glad I made
some videos and kept a diary because the "emotions" are fading fast
and I am getting back to my happy go lucky self. I am a "happy bunny"
at the moment with my ferry ticket to Funchal in one hand, the Jet2
ticket to Manchester in the other, Cirrus safely on the concrete and
the prospect of a nights sleep without listening to those damn wires
clacking in the mast... oh boy am I looking forward to sorting them
little mothers out!

On the other hand I do feel like I have failed, but I know I gave it
my best shot and it really was so hard at times... this is the hardest
thing I have ever done by a country mile and I salute those who have
been long distances on a boat all alone - they are better men (and
women) than me.

Regards to all and I promise that i will sit down when I get back and
type it all up. I need to give Cirrus a good clean tomorrow and take
the sails down etc. I cannot leave her here looking dirty and uncared
for. By the way, there is no I mean none, nothing at all on the
bottom!! I thought I would have some growth but not a single bit of
slime or whatever grows on the bottom of boats.. it is as clean as
the day I painted it.. how weird is that!

I am going to make myself a massive omelette now, or it might be
scrambled egg :) You know, .......if I had a brain I would be
dangerous!!!!

ps Steve - I have told my wife so many whoppers about what this has
cost me that I have run out of money - or rather Barclaycard has run
out of money, but when I get Cirrus to the Med I will try again for a
new engine. I am hoping to enrol in a male escort agency and
"entertain ladies" to earn some money over the winter.... and then I
woke up....

..my frying pan (with its broken handle) awaits....Landlubber John

Actually, I'd like more. When I lived in D.C. I had a Scottish buddy from
the British Embassy who spoke of "square eyes" which is someone who watches
too much TV. I can't think of more that I thought uncommon right now.

No head winds from Madeira to Gib, the algarve is nice, you need to make a decision, if you want to spend all your time in a marina and motor or use your sail boat.

The problem with the med is the marina prices, in the Canaries the marinas are cheaper, what was your plan at the start? what drove you to do this? you need to start looking inwards to find your own way, otherwise you are going to end up lost.

In the med there is either too much wind or not enough, I lived in Gibraltar for 2 years.

If money is not an object then maybe you want to sail in the med, if you dont want to sail by your self then it is probably the right thing to do, however if you want to see the world..................

Look John...All these are expected symptoms...my humble advice is to read about them at http://www.sfbaysss.org/tipsbook/ , as the author has delt with them . I insist that you should take the time and read this...
Hung on tight , after all it is only your self you have to deal with and not the wind , the sea , the fate or whatever... No one is chasing you , do it your way...

If you end up passing trought the Corinthian Golf / GREECE , I would be huppy to meet you. (email...)
The same goes for Marco Baldan as well...

Thanks Marco, I think I should have turned left into the Med now......
but I think it is a very difficult sail from Madeira to Gibraltar?
Head winds maybe - not sure... anyone know?
I have to say I am feeling better by the minute and just enjoying
answering emails and sitting on "steady" ground having a coffee and a
smoke. I think I am also very homesick.. and I did not realise how
much I would miss my family and home - I shall sit down and try to
rationalise how I feel about all this but at the moment I would rather
poke a needle in my eye than go back out to sea! The isolation just
drives me insane...

If anyone can think of a way to get the boat back to the Med (or the
UK) I would be very interested - as long as it does not involve me
sailing into more headwinds and bad weather!

...... by the way, thank you all so much for your help, advice and
support. I do actually get quite lonely out here and it is so good to
get emails from group members. I shall write up the "epic" tail as
soon as I can - I type very slowly!

Re: "... The problem with the med is the marina prices, ..."

In the news here in the U.S. it is said that Italian tax collectors have
gotten aggressive with boat owners who have in turn left the country
leaving lots of marinas relatively empty. If the story is completely true
then that sounds like an opportunity, but who knows for how long.

Hi all, thanks for the advice. I am getting a ferry to Funchal in
about 3 hours and then a flight back to Manchester. Cirrus is safe in
the yard here at Porto santo and I am coming back in the Spring with
an experienced friend to take her to the Med. I will be able to get
some more practice and more experience a bit closer to home (and spare
parts!) maybe fit a new engine and then have a think about what to do
next. It seems a sensible plan to me and I am feeling much better
about the experience.

The sun is shining and the sky is blue so all is well with the world!

Thanks for the offer, Thanasis! I really enjoyed Pilos, Port Kajo and Monemvasia in Peloponnesus, and Kithira Island, then proceeded through Zakintos, Kefalonia and Corfu'. Now I am in Brindisi, south of Italy. i'm trying to reach Venice rapidly, sailing, as the prop shaft bearing of my Vega is quite worn out.
Next sail could be Venice, Patras, Corinth Canal and Egean sea.....
If oyu plan to pass by Venice, let me know, we could have a chat in front of a glass of good wine!

Fair winds,

Hi Alan,

That's true! Italy seems to have the highest marina fees of the entire Europe! But...if oyu know where to go, it can be relative,y cheap.

I'm now in Brindisi Lega Navale Marina, 22 euro/day for the Vega,
In Spain, in Cadiz and Barbate, in State owned marinas, the Vega pays 9.4 euro.
In Greece, most of the ports and marinas are free of charge, althoug the service is pretty basic, no toilets and irregular water supply...

Its no longer 9,4 for a Vega in Andalucia, they have pump up their prices incredibly (+70% for long term berths) and in Portugal in the algarve you will struggle to find space in a Marina, locals from Cadiz, Huelva and Sevilla provinces have moved to Portugal due to prices being 65% of what are in Spain.

Nevertheless, in June, July, August and September a berth in Portugal for a vega is about 30 Euros, in Spain is about 20 Euros, So Italy is not that expensive any more, take advantage of Greece since I bet by December this year they will be hiking up the prices regardless of facilities.

Hi all, I am safely at home and my darling wife is cooking me a big
fat steak..... It is a wonderful sunny evening, my daughter had put
balloons and bunting on the gate and it is so good to be home.
I slept on a park bench last night but the trip home was fairly
uneventful. It has been a real adventure and it is not over yet but I
am glad to be home with my family to recover my sanity and relax for a
while. I shall get the rest of the trip all typed up soon so you can
have a giggle at the events from La Coruna to Porto Santo....
Thanks to all.....my steak and my bed await.

John the relaxed....
