Is the outboard being offered for the boat or is it for a dingy? I carry a 2.5 hp outboard on my stern rail for my dingy. If you have a working inboard, why would you need the extra weight of an outboard for the boat?

That would concern me greatly. It will cost a lot of money to re-power a boat. If the inboard is working but in poor shape it might be a good idea to pass up this boat unless you are a mechanic and can get engines cheap. Otherwise, start looking elsewhere. If the hair on the back of your neck stands up, it does so for a reason. Obviously, something has alerted you that this may be a risky purchase so it is time to start looking around.
How about you put down the perimeters of what you are looking for (size, price you are willing to spend, and type of use you envision for it) and see what other members can scare up. Yachtworld is a handy resource for finding boats and I am sure that you can find a better boat.

Your biggest concern may still be the engine on this one. If the previous owner had a 9HP mounted(possibly too big for a dingy), he must not have had a lot of faith in the inboard's reliability. My first daysailor had an unreliable outboard and i rigged brackets for a quick slap-on of an electric that I kept stored in the cuddy, so you may see where I'm going with this. I don't have as large a boat as you're considering and It cost nearly as much at a mere 30 years old. While both of my boats - 30 yr old and 40 yr old were bargains for purchase I spent twice as much as the purchase price making them 'ship shape' so to speak. You're not planning on singlehanding it thru the ICW and on to texas before all engine and sail issues are completely up to snuff, are you?

To go down the intra costal from NJ to Texas your going to have to motor most of the time
Your talking 1400 km or so at 70 km a day its going to take you at leat 20 days of motoring
12 hours a day providing things go well. I have no stake in this
what I do have is over 50 years experience Dont do it. You get one splash of salt water on
the carburetor or the distributor on that 40 year old Atomic 4 and its gonna let you down What we are talking about here is a motor that was discarded as obsolete over 30 years ago
Sure there are die hards on this board that love em. Youve heard from some of them. These people are all very experienced ignition men. My opinion as an experienced off shore sailor is this. Truck the boat down to Texas. When you get it there remove the Atomic 4 and use it as a mooring. Thats what I did with 2 of them a long time ago. Get yourself
a new 15 HP outboard mounted on a bracket and go sailing with your family.
