The 3-4 times we've trailer sailed so far in 2016 it seemed the wind was always just right during setup and breakdown but went flat each time we left the dock. a recent weather forecast was for 3 days of unseasonably warm very low 80s days with mid 40s nights so we decided to jump on the chance of an early season overnighter on the boat. arrived at the lake by 10AM, got set up, and of course the winds began to diminish as we motored out of the marina. un-detered, we motored across the lake and cooked up a nice lunch on-board and awaited the mid-late afternoon winds. right on schedule the winds picked up to a very pleasant 8-10 for much of the remainder of the evening and eventually pushed us to the West side of the lake, where we anchored about 40' off shore so we'd be set to capture the early morning sun. There's a small boat or hike-in only campground there, so we tossed the anchor about 100 feet out and ran to the beach where we tied off the bow to a stump. this let us pull ourselves into the beach to use the facilities or stretch our legs and then return to the boat and pull ourselves back out to anchor. worked out real well.

Lasagna onboard for dinner, and after the evening scrabble game, we hit the hay around 11:00 and drifted off to sleep to the sounds of the small waves lapping against the hull.
As the sun crested the mountains across the lake, the winds were already beginning to pick up so we downed a cup of Swiss Miss and headed out for a really fun morning sail that lasted till about 10:00 AM . there were brief periods of movement after that, but mostly we just lounged, ate, had a Corona, and drifted to wherever the lake would take us. all in all a MOST enjoyable early April treat! even got a bit of a tan started for the year. :)
We also enjoyed the company of a C 25 for a wile. So we weren't the only crazy people out on an early April day. ;)

Anxious for many more this year,

You can't beat it! Good for you! We are expecting rain/sleet/snow today, possibly 1-3". No boat prep for me, I gotta work at 11:00 anyway...

Salt has been thrown on my wounds.... This is the 3rd weekend in a row I`ve had to cancel dropping my mast to prepare for the trip to the marina for the season. It won`t stop raining, or the wind won`t stop blowing a hurricane, or it won`t get above 25 degrees on days I can wrangle both of my sons to help! AAAARRRGHHH!

Thanks for the story Russ. Sounds like you had a GREAT time. This summer our trips will be pretty limited I'm hoping to get our boat wet 2 times. When I retire though, next summer, we'll be heading to the clear lakes of Minnesota.

Hey Russ tell us more about the lasagna. I never thought to cook lasagne on the grill. Any tricks to it, besides slow cook on low heat?

Very easy…. We cheat. As with most everything we eat on the boat, except meat, it's pre-prepared at home before we leave. pull it out of the ice box, heat and eat. I even pre-mix the ingredients for morning hash browns ahead of time. mix up the shredded spuds, green pepper, onion, seasoning, and egg. it's frozen or refrigerated at home and ready to cook on the boat. my favorite meal of the day. :) if you look at the photo above, you'll see that I've modified the grill grate so half of it can be removed. this lets the frying pan set down closer to the flame for this type of cooking. we hardly ever use our regular cook stove except to heat water for showers (12V pump used in the cockpit) or dish washing.

I have lived without an oven in my house for 9 years. If I want to bake something, I just do it out on the gas grill. Baking is easier if the grill has more than one burner; bake on the indirect heat side. But I worked with a grill that did not have that feature for 7 years. The main trick is to learn how to dial in the temperature. Lots of baking is done at 350F to 400F. The grills I've used can easily exceed that, so I use an oven thermometer and get the temperature stabilized before I start baking.

Another way to bake is with a "Bakepacker" It is a grid that sits inside a pot; add water almost to the top of the grid, Add ingredients in a freezer zipploc or oven bag. It uses steam from the boiling water to bake the ingredients. Best of all...little clean up, just throw the bag away. It also works well for warming up frozen meals.

Many decades ago as an eagle scout we made an aluminum oven as a project that sits on one burner of a coleman gas stove, maybe I can find the plans and post it.

The best thing for baking on a boat if you do not have a regular oven is to use a Dutch Oven Pot.
