First 235 Reefing problem?

Hey gang- We've had our 1989 First 235 for almost ten years, but only now discovered all these great web resources. So- here's a question that I've had for years on our 235's reefing system. We have the stock, original Zspars mast and UK Sailmakers mainsail. I have never been able to use the 2nd mainsail reef due to the fact that the reef cringle can't be drawn anywhere even close to the reefing hook at the gooseneck. See the attached photo to see what I mean. The one and only time that we were able to use that topmost reef was by removing the lower 3 feet of slides from the luff of the sail! NOT "jiffy-reefing" for sure! Normally this isn't a problem on the retchedly light winds of Lake Lanier, but "when you need it, you need it." I don't have another nearby 235 to compare, but I have to wonder if this sail or mast was mis-rigged from the dealer or original owner. Or am I missing something altogether! Thanks! Dave

You need a gate in the mast slot

I don't have a photo of it but my slides go all the way down to the boom and do not stop at the opening in the slot. I fabricated a couple of alum. plates to cover the slot in place of the plastic stock feeder (which was designed for a boltrope luff. One is riveted in place and the other is held in place with blind nuts and thumb screws. This allows the slides to fall all the way to the mast. I've tested that my second cringle will make it to the horn too. Unfortunately, I haven't seen a mast gate available on the market, so you'll need come up with your own. Look around the marina and I'll bet there are other boats with similar setups.

Yes, the gate works well

The gate that David mentions works well. I am going to make one for my boat after seeing it in action on a Santana 22 I raced on the past few years. My buddy also just made the gates out of aluminum plate and rounded the edges. While not a simple purchase option, it was not too hard to make. At the least, you could have one made if you desire, probably for very little. Dave, if you feel bored the next time at your boat, perhaps you can take measurements and a pic of your gate. I'd post it on the site. Also, stop by the Beneteau F235 forum when you get a chance. Kelly http://www.beneteau235.com/
