Finished bulkhead replacement project

The new bulkhead is quite a bit darker than the rest of the wood, but I doubt there was anything I could have done about that.

I should note: When we first got the boat I was a bit intimidated by this job, despite my years as a carpenter. I felt it would be totally different. I got estimates ranging from $5-10,000 and up for it so I kind of put off doing anything about it and now I'm glad I did. Basically, I think almost anybody could do this job, as long as they have the tools and take their time.

Epoxy Water Proofing

Very smart move sealing the plywood with epoxy. Make sure you seal the chainplate screw holes also as any future leaks could cause the new bulkhead to rot from water leaking into the holes. If you seal the holes this should last forever.

I resealed the chain plate screw holes and the penetration itself with butyl tape, as recommended by (I think) Maine Sail. If you notice, I also sealed the through bolts at the bottom of the bulkhead with butyl tape on the head side of the bulkhead.

A future job for me will be to reseal all the deck penetrations, including all the stanchions.

I have done this same repair on my Columbia 8.7. I had to remove the entire port side interior to get to the bulkhead to remove it. You were lucky that you were able to do it the way you did.
