The central point is - if you fear galvanic activity or you are actually seeing galvanic corrosion - then anodes will help. But - no matter whether anodes are necessary in every case - using them will not hurt anything.

I wonder if a warning about over-protecting. I've seen wooden boats damaged by too many zincs and aluminum boats with the paint blown off by mag anodes.

The boat here is an FRP Catalina - so over-protection is essentially impossible - but you are dead bang right in other cases.

A wood boat hull potential needs to be constantly monitored and so does any metal hull. In the case of metal hulls active hull potential systems are really mandatory.

Here are some pics of the remote anode system I created using a Groco TD-500 Garboard Drain Plug ($11) as the base fitting to mount an anode on the bottom of the hull and electrically connected to the Keel Winch.
I have not added the wire yet, and still need to get some small hardware pieces (bronze lock washer), but you get the idea; I will do a more detailed write up in my resto thread.

I bought the Catalina Direct bolt-on anodes - they require drilling a hole through the keel. I will be slipped in salt water for the summer and have to think that they will be helpful.

I'm not quite sure where to put them on the keel, but, I plan to figure it out and get them mounted in the next week or so. I welcome any additional advice.

Ralph: my C-22 is a 1987, so it has a cast iron keel. Catalina Direct sells the anodes with a through-bolt and a carbide drill bit for drilling the hole in the keel.

Was hoping it was lead and we could put this to rest.

But seeing that it is subject to corrosion, as Charles Erwin has previously mentioned, cover as much as possible with an adherent coating to keep the areas requiring protection as small as possible. This will enable the zinc to do the best possible job.

That would have been nice! So, I don't relish a hole through the leading edge of my cast iron keel, even just a 1/4" or 3/8" one. But, then again, if it'll be sitting in salt water for several months, it seems that protection is a necessity. The Catalina Direct kit is pretty straight forward. Still, I hate to put holes in things - but it either that, or rust holes.
