There are ahh days and there are blah days, any favorite trips that are just outstanding in your mind. Last spring we sailed down the Baja coast, foggy and cold for the first part of the trip, winds varied but one night north of Turtle Bay just stands out. Clear, dark with no moon, stars were amazing, wind just perfect with very gentle seas. It was a little cool, but that night watch seemed to fly by. Used the stars more than the compass. Amazing to think of the millions of light years it took for that star shine to reach the earth and I may have been the only one to see it.

Blue Whale 50yds entering SanMiguelIsl....

..on an unusually calm day with little wind and 2-3ft swells (believe me when I say that is very unusual for San Miguel in the Channel Islands). We were about 2 miles from the entrance to Cuyler Harbor when this Blue Whale blowing his hole making lots of noise and eating was spotted of our starboard side. We turned the engine off and the thing came towards us diving under our boat and coming up the other side. This lasted for about 1/2 hr....we actually got tired of that puppy..and we continued on our way. What we loved was the serenity of the experience and that we were the only boat around given that few ever go to San Miguel. None of us worried about the potential if this whale got pissed off at us. IT WAS BIG WITH A BIG MOUTH AND A BIG BLOW HOLE AND TWO REALLY BIG EYES AND BIG FINS. abe abe

Just the other day

I was out for a day sail with my 2 year old son just last weekend. He was having lots of fun getting all tangled up in the lines and playing with the winches as we sailed the Peconic bays in a nice 12 knot blow....then I looked down moments later and he was fast alseep beside be. Rob

Too many to count!

One of my favorites though was back in late June. We were sailing from Silver Bay Marina on the north shore of Lake Superior and heading west to Sand Island in the Apostles. The temp was in the high 60's so a jacket felt good but the sun was warm. I was on the helm and Captain Grumpy and our friend John were sacked out in the cockpit. The wind was light, maybe 6 knots and it barely ruffled the surface of the lake. We were on a port beam reach doing about 4 knots and the wake that Emmanuel, our Hunter Legend 40.5 made was the only disruption on it's watered silk surface. I had a loaf of homemakde bread tucked under the dodger where it was nice and warm and out of the wind. The heady semll of yeast while the bread rises wafts back to me on the light breeze and makes me think longingly of dinner. There is not another boat in sight and the blue of the lake seems to melt into the far off south shore. The silence was perfect. I will remember that moment always.

Blue Whale

Abe, I am green with envy. Have never seen a whale in the wild, not even in Alaska a few years ago. Have seen most other sea but never a whale.Would almost kill to see that.

My Grandaughter

This spring my wife, 4 year old grandaughter, 6 year old grandson and I were sailing and the wind came up. We heeled quite a bit and my grandson on the windward side was a little white knuckled holding on tight. Adriana my granddaughter on the lee side looked at the water and immediately scooted over and stuck her feet in the cool water giggling in delight. Yes she was wearing her PFD and Yes she was clipped so that she couldn't fall overboard. Later my wife took the helm and I held Adri with her feet dragging through the water. My grandson also wanted his turn at getting wet. But the sparkle in Adri's eyes as she scooted over to wet her feet was priceless.

The Day I have been trying to top

This was 2 years ago, my friend and I had the whole day open to us to go sailing. Headed out from the mooring in Falmouth ME and tacked out Hussey Sound. From there we set our course for Halfway Rock and just kept her on the same course, barely touching the tiller. Rounded the rock and headed for Portland Headlight, again just barely touching the tiller the whole way, and started down the channel towards Portland. The wind nearly died and from there ghosted along in the failing light of day back to the mooring. As near to the perfect day of sailing I can imagine.

They are all good.

Just this past weekend we went out for an overnighter, no wind. So we motored to one of our favorite anchorages to watch the sunset and get prepped for the night. As we were motoring, a pod of dolphins came up visit us. There must have been 8-10 of them. They were playing in the prop wash. They would nose up to the prop to within about a foot and roll around in the turbulence. I have never seen them do that before. It was and always is a thrill to be that close to the dophins. That evening was so nice, that I slept out in the cockpit. The evening would have be just a bit more perfect without the handful of mosquitos that like to dive bomb me. But, that's the price we pay to live in paradise. Ross_in_tampa 1979 Oday 25 "lola"

sailing to work and back

Granted, that morning "sail" is a motor more often than not because of no wind, but leaving the office and raising the sails to come home (my slip is a 2 minute drive from the house) is heavenly! http://sports.webshots.com/album/559612351GBoICr
