My boat's name is...

very appropriate. I bought it ov3er the phone very cheap, on trust in the advice of a friend, and his marina manager. I did not inquire about the boat's name, because it was the boat I was looking for, not words. I'm Irish, and the name of the boat I bought is... "Celtic Clipper" !

The Other Woman

At the suggestion of the admiral, which I thought was perfect, I named my boat The Other Woman. Playing on the fact that all boats are she and she is the woman I would spend time with after my wife, I realized it was perfect. If I am going to have a mistress it might as well be a boat. No cheaper than the human kind though. Fair Winds!

Two names

Actually my Cal was named 'Kefi' when we got her, which we finally determined to mean 'fun' in Greek. Favorite name as noted before is 'Never Again II'. I met an owner recently that provided another clever name, 'Francoise'. He bought a used Oday 28 that he is refurbishing and has everything torn apart. His girlfriend named the boat after Francoise Gilot, the girlfriend of Picasso. My sailing dinghy is named Nancy, after the Nancy Dawson of an old song favored by sailors in British frigates.

Is it really up to me to change my boats name?

I just bought my first 1981 H30ft sailboat about a month ago . The name of it is " Bonnie Lass" not real sure what it means or who it was named after. But I do know that the man I bought the boat from had her for 15 years and never changed her name,He gave me all kinds of papers, books, manuals, etc.Along with the boat and I found The original paperwork to the owner that bought her new in 1984. Hes the one that gave her its name. Hes pasted on now. My friends and family asked me if I`m changing her name? Well I`m not sure if I should , I mean now that I know the history of the boats owners. And now I`m the third owner of her and now its up to me to change the name of her or keep the same she had from new ? What Would You Do? I kind of want to keep her named what she it because it means something in a way. It would be nice to know what or who she was name after and why? Maybe its just best I leave "Bonnie Lass" on the stern of which is now my new sailboat. Chet

You could go Australian and call

her "A Flaming Shelia" Which isn't quite as kind as "Bonnie Lassie".

Couldn't descide between two names.

I forget where I heard this but two owners can't decide on a name. One want's Nautical Queen and the other wants Sea Witch so they split it down the middle NAUSEA.

Some of my favorite boat names: Myasis Dragon Ship For Brains Cou-Lin-Breeze (my family's first boat, a 22' Chris Craft Utility; bought in partnership with a friend named Lindquist) Flashback (the sailboat that got me back into sailing after 30 years; it has a "70's" green hull)

Wine helps decisions

My boat was originally named "Great Haste," but that didn't fit well for us and was hard to handle on the radio. So sitting aboard drinking champagne and watching fireworkds our first night as owners on a New Years' Eve in San Diego, friends Dan and Lorraine (of s/v Zephrus, currently in the Sea of Cortez) suggested the obvious for a person planning to retire after 40 years in the news business. "Good News" it is, and shall remain while I own her. My other favorite name, for the 48 foot Maple Leaf owned by college professor friends, is: "Sabbatical." The message on the home answering macoine says, "I'm on Sabbatical, just leave a message!" The other I like was a cartoon, but the boat name was perfect: Beyond Our Means Sanders s/v/ Good News

WASOKI

On our way back from Mackinac last year, the boat next to us at Beaver Island was named WASOKI. I don't recall if it was in fine print below the name on the boat, or if I asked what it meant and they told me. But the answer was - We Are Spending Our Kids Inheritance T J

The Journey

I had just bought my first sailboat and was really having trouble coming up with a name. While talking to stink boat friends they were bragging about how quickly they can get from place to place. I told them it is not in the destination, it's in the journey. My next boat's name was a no brainer, The Journey Continues.... And one of my favorite from a my marina, on a Cal 22, A Fool and His Money.

The Glass Menagerie

Some people thought we were literary giants, but the boat was named because when you have ma and pa, three boys and a dog on board, it was some times like a zoo on a fiberGLASS boat. The boat was only 23ft, but every one had a place to sleep. The new boat still needs a name.

Help from the kids

My boat is an O'Day 272, with I really enjoy and try to keep in top shape. My kids, all twenty-somethings, say I'm anally retentive as well as obsessive compulsive over the boat. Maybe...it's my boat. But I told them that the word "anal", if used in the boat name, would probably draw the ire of (insert name of whiner here) and that I probably shouldn't use it. For years, they've usually referred to me as "D" instead of dad, pops, old man, etc. and that's okay. So... Since the boat's an O'Day, capable of sailing the seas, and they call me "D"... They thought that "O'Sea D" was appropriate. Now, if I can just get them to be as creative in completing school and making their OWN money...

O'day Names

Rich -- As a former owner of a 272LE myself, I think its a great boat, and hope you enjoy it for many years. Your post inspired me to a name I wish i had thought of when I had my O'Day. How about "O'Day Can You Sea?" Well, maybe its better for email than painted on the transom. Ted Weitz s/v "Gossamer Wings" Beneteau 323
