Purpose

I wanted my boat names to have deep meaning; O'day 22 - Comfort Zone, SeaRay 22 - ForPlay (actually the wife made me spell it FourPlay, it's our 4th boat, we have 4 boys and I can't afford to play golf anymore. FORE!).

Match your occupation

Guy down the dock has one I'd like. I spend part of my time as a salesperson, and the guy down the dock has a boat named "Sails Call." So I could tell my boss I'll be out this afternoon on a .................... Hey, I'd be telling the truth! Another friend works for Mastercard. Named his boat ...priceless I bought "Different Drummer" a couple years ago. I want to change her name to "Instead Of", since my financial situation is that I own and sail her "instead of" lots of other choices. Tom Monroe Carlyle Lake

Boat names

One of our favourites when shopping for a boat was "Blame it on Buffet". That just about summed it up for us! Our boat came with "Nodin Jiiman" which is Ojibway for canoe with feather aka sailboat. We are renaming her "Daystar" after my great-grandfather's shrimping boat in England in the Maritime Museum. Our friends have a power boat named "Another Dilema" - which is what it always is!

What's in a name?

If you look at BoatUS or other sites, you'll find a list of all the many used and popular names. I guess I'm surprised when I find that a certain name is used over and over again, like "Wet Dream" and the like. I keep thinking that a boat name ought to somehow be unique to the boat and owner. Silly me. And then there are those boat names that you just scratch your head in wonder when you think about someone actually trying to broadcast it 3 or more times over the VHF, the response always being "Say again" or "vessel calling please repeat." Is it really too hard to pick a name that fits your boat AND can be pronounced and understood over the VHF if you really needed to be understood?

When we bought our O'day 26

last year we started a list of possible name to try to choose from. Since we are apple growers with a year round farm stand, 7 day work weeks tend to be the rule, not the exeption. So with that in mind we started the list with "Knot Workin'" and "Work Can Wait". Our 7 year old daughter came up with "Delaney". We had to stop and think about that for a moment and then remembered Jimmy Buffet's song "Delaney talks to statues". The refrain in that song is what she was thinking of. Fourth was a whimsical "Knota John Deere", but we settled on the fifth, "Apple O'Day". There are days I think that we could add under it in small letters "keeps the head doctor away"

We Dream

No that's not my favorite boat name. I saw it on a MacGreagor 26 up in the gulf islands. There was a large space between We and Dream and you could still see a ghost of the t that was scraped off. What really gave it away however was the drips comming (pun intended) off the end of dream.

Glander Tavana Mexico Beach, Florida
Our first boat

I had always wanted a silboat. My first wife thought I was stupid. My second wife (much smarter than the first, of course) thought it was a good idea. So, we bought a 1976 Chrysler 22. We had alot of fun on that boat, but always longer for something bigger that we could cruise on. Alas, until that time, we had to have "Patience". A coupe of years ago, we bought a Glander Tavana. She's 33' long and sails like a dream. Unfortunately, we now have a desire for a sailing catamaran. Alas, again, until such a time as we move up further, we will have to have "Patience Too".

Our latest boat is "Lion's Paw"

after the shell (and the children's book published in '68 but now out of print)...previous to that was "Tangled Sheets" (I did not name it), and "Passionata" (named after a Beethoven piano sonata, and a race horse).

Several Gillnet fishing boats in the 32 foot range

Get towed, either by their owners or a commercial tow guy back and forth from fishing the Georgia Strait across Vancouver Island to Port Alberni or Tofino where they fish the Pacific Ocean side. One of these fishermen painted the transom of his boat yellow and named her Wide Load.
