Some family ideas

We asked the kids (6 and 8 at the time) and they wanted "Poop Deck" I wanted "Fat Bastard" but thought the coast guard would not approve Ended up with "Sea Weasel" cus it was the only Sea anything I'd never seen on a boat.

My vote

I saw a S&S designed perfectly maintained 35 ft sloop named Fare Well Leadbelly is a great name I saw - for a blues fan. I once saw a race boat with a name I reallyliked: Slot Machine Warren: good topic!

I never appreciated the "cuteness" of some names,

but our name is 'SYBARIS'. Sybaris is the name of a city in Greek Mythology where the Sybarites were a civilization of people who did no work. They simply played all day and they were dedicated to decadence and high-living. Seems like an appropiate name for a sailboat. Sadly, the Sybarite's demise occurred because, with so much free time on their hands, they taught their horses how to dance to music. Their enemies, learning of this, engaged them in battle and began to play music as the attack began. The horses reared on their hind legs and began to dance. The Sybarites, unable to fight on dancing horses, were defeated. So sad......

Favorites

Well, my favorite has already been listed - Never Again II, Next in line would have to be the guy who named his O'Day 34 "Sloop De Jour" I like the double play on names - sloop/soup De Jour/O'Day. I was tempted to steel his idea, but decided that was bad style, so I named my O'Day 25 - O'Jure Then there's the two guys at our marina. One has a boat called "Blow Me". The other bought an aging Hunter called "Sea Horse", but the "s" had fallen off. He didn't like the look of "Sea Hor_e", so he peeled the "e" off. I've often said that a radio conversation between the two would be interesting.

"Owen" and "Rowen"

Boat and tender. I don't usually like the play on words type of names but I thought this one was clever. Personally I like "Aedyth" which will likely be my new boat's(Ericson 35) name. My old boat(Pearson 28) was/is "Athais"(leisure in gaelic). My daysailor(1955 Rhodes 18) is "Matilda". My wife kept humming "Waltzing Matilda" one day while sanding brightwork. My tender(196? Cape Dory 10) is "dinghy". I know, not very original. Tim R.

I did a double take when I saw this one! (In case that you don't 'get it,' read it as, "I owe it to me." I'll let you guess if it was power or sail...) It was my favorite out of the many great names that we encountered when doing the "Great Circle" Cruise.

I forgot my all time favorite...

Assuager - meaning to calm. It is not the name itself I like so well, it is what one can do to it. I know that the drill bit is spelled auger, but that is close enough for me.

Always makes for interesting conversation

especially with a mix of sailboaters and powerboaters. It has been my observation that there seems to be 2 types of names- one that more shows the cleverness of the namer- ie the owner, and one that more reflects the "personality" of the craft. I would put names like "Sir Osis of the River" in the first group and names like Endeavour and Defiant and of course Bluenose in the later group. I much prefer the second group and two of my favourites are Radiance and l'attitude.

It's always wise to steer away from names like, "Storm Master", or "Screw the Coast Guard".

This one is just... nice

When I bought my used Hunter 30 with no name I discovered while cleaning her haul she was once "Generous Return". It was tempting to keep this name but I went with Three Ships.

Started out looking for waterfront property. $$$ and the realization of the maintenance required led to a sailboat instead... the ultimate waterfront property. Hence the name. :)
