Walter Cronkite

He named his boat "Assignment".. When he wasn't on the TV set, they'd just say "blah, blah...for Mr. Cronkite who is on assignment".

Moby 'n Lulu

Named my old Geary 18 "Moby n' Lulu". Uh... er... named after our pet names for our private parts. When I sold it, I suggested to the new owners (two male friends) that they change the boat name without going into detail about what the name meant. I did this because some in my sailing club knew the origin of the name. Well, they didn't rename the boat. Awhile back, Jim called his buddy on his cell and I heard: "Hey, Lulu, this is Moby..."!!! Jim didn't understand why I was rolling on the floor practically purple from laughter. Needless to say I did not tell him...

Befana

My daughter wrote a report about Christmas around the world (in grade 7?). It included the story of la Befana, the Christmas Witch. After living on a 26 foot Excalibur for a year, I got a Catalina 30. It was December ... I thought about mighty clippers like Sea Witch, and thought of Christmas Witch ... so "Befana" Every time I see the boat, I think of my daughter (now 26) and the report she was so proud of. :) Randy

I forgot the name of my own boat!

Not that they are the best but: My first racing sail boat, I named after Canadian Mike Plant he was lost at sea in Oct '92 I bought My 'J' in Dec '92, So Coyote it was. After my father passed away I realized that dad's stone at the cimetary is right next to Gerry Rouf's stone, another Canadian Solo racer lost at sea a year before dad passed away. The power boat I named Al's Hat as my name is Alain and the boat was a Hatteras. Lame play on word at same time since it is where I hung my hat for a while after selling the house. The Oday has no name (yet) thinking of printing "bottom's up!" on the water line, but the official name is undecided yet... Voila C ya, a.

my boat is Pleiades

If you're a Buffett fan, you'll know it's mentioned several times in his songs. Plus it's one of my daughter's favorite night sky star clusters to find; it's right over our driveway in the winter. Also found several mentions in the Bible. When I researched the mythology of it, I found the info below. Had it printed on a plaque, which now hangs in the salon. Pleiades is the star cluster known as the Seven Sisters. According to Greek legend, the Sisters were daughters of Atlas and Pleione, the Sailing Queen. The brightest sister is Alcyone, the queen who wards off evil storms. Greek superstition cautioned sailors to set sail only during the months when the Pleiades were visible.

Ya Gotta Have a Story to Go With It

I think you must have a story to go along with a name, to really personalize it, as you personalize your boat. My powerboat/fishing boat is called THIRD WISH. OK, if the genie really does appear and grant you three wishes, the first two are 'no brainers': first wish = you and your people are healthy second wish = enough money to live comfortably but the third wish, that is the clunker: what else matters, really? The only third wish worth a damn is "No knowledge of when you were tapped and even found the magic lamp." For me, I have all I need with the first two, and the THIRD WISH was granted: I don't know when the genie granted me my wish (s), but he must have done it!
