I'm in the "No" racing group.
Learning how to sail and owning a boat was the lifestyle that I wanted to move toward AFTER I gave up my last organized competitive obsession, which was racing formula cars with SCCA (Sports Car Club of America). I was involved with them in one form or another for about 20 years. I drove for more than 15 years. As I moved from one class to another, it eventually became "my" activity, and my wife just came along for the weekend. I wanted to find something that we could participate in and enjoy together. A lower intensity sailing life allows us to do that.
I still have other activities where I can get my performance and intensity fix without getting drawn over the line into being overly competitive. I'm a 20+ year PSIA ski instructor from December - April at Big Sky Resort in Montana (contact me via PM if you ever visit!), I still ski double diamond terrain regularly and in varied conditions, and I still own and frequently use a current technology pair of racing skis. I also mix up my summer time activities with a little performance driving with the Pacific Northwest Region Porsche Club by volunteering and attending occasional "driver's skills" days and other similar events.
