recently got my hands on a oday 25. The cabin is very musty and I feel it is from the fabric that has been installed on the walls. I would like to remove this and replace it with something that in moisture and mold resistant. Any suggestions?

Vinyl

Vinyl will not hold the moisture. It is fairly easy to install and is available from Defender. If you have the $$$ you could glass in some ribs and apply 1/4" mahogany , cherry, or other ornamental wood. r.w.landau

Small Boat Moisture

I had a catalina 25 with no ventilation when the boat was locked up. The boat was a mess as a result, mildew bags work but wear out quickly. My current boat is an O'Day35 with Dorade vents and I have no problem at all with mildew. The air circulation with the dorades is adequate to help remove stale air and moisture. I strongly recommend you fix the source of your problem before fixing the cabin. Add some solar vents or maybe some nicro vents that work on a vacuum principle, but do something to add ventilation to your boat. Then do what you want to the interior. In hindsight i should have added a solar vent to the front hatch or over the head, I have a real aversion to drilling holes in my boats but this would have helped maintain the value better than anything else I did. Regards, dave

Nasty but worth it

Jim, My wife and I completely rebuilt the interior of our 25 and the nastiest part of the whole job was the liner. O'day used the "goo from hell" to attach the original liner and removing that adhesive is the hard part. Acetone, spirits, naptha, you name it , had no effect on this stuff at all. I finally got it of with a circular wire brush attached to my grinder. Be sure to remove everything from the cabin and then cover up whatever is still left with freezer paper or drop cloths, this is one messy job. Be careful not to apply too much pressure to the hull as the wire brush will dig into the roving if you stay in one spot too long. Once we got it clean we applied 1/4" foam to the hull and then vinyl over the foam. Both these items were obtained at a fabric shop at a resonable price compared to the marine version. We used 3M headliner spray adhesive for the attachment. Be sure that you fit everything first and be prepared to take whoever helps you out to a very nice dinner. It was a lot of work but it was the one most important part of the rebuild. The occasional mildew wipes right off and periodically (once a year or so) we have to do some touch up reattachment. It was a big job but definaly worth it. Good Luck, PM

Just clean liner.

I recommend using a Bissel clean green machine to just clean the liner in place. This Works great if its not to dirty. I've done this on the 40 and I have a lot of this fabric liner. Do it on a dry week, get some fans going, and it takes the smell out. Use Resolve cleaner if you have stains. Removal of the liner is a bitch. The foam backing sticks to the glue after you get the fabic off. Its then a night mare, absolute nightmare to remove the foam. Chris

combination

It sounds like that if you combine Dave and Chris's advice, it may work. Clean the liner and put in some much needed solar powered vents. r.w.landau

Might I suggest something else? Dampness of the fabric can be caused by a number of reasons. Perhaps a simple solar fan will alleviate that. However, I would consider trying to find out if your toerails or deck to hull joint (God forbid) is leaking. If so, fix that first. Then I would try cleaning the fabric first bofore going through the pains of removing/replacing it. In any case, elimination of the source of the problem should be your first concern. Of course, it may simply have been a result of improper storage or long storage with no interim maintenance. My O'Day 25 has the original fabric. It is neither dirty or musty. Of course, this boat has never been stored outdoors during the 'off-season', so that has helped. Russ Marcks
