Thanks for the replies, I didn't consider the unsupported load. I will place it about 8-12 inches above the fore stay. The masthound pictured on the right is the same one I was thinking of. This will be a winter project. Need to have the yard lower my mast. I'm not courageous enough to scale the mast.
In the tried and true tradition of project creep....

While the mast is down it is time to do a thorough inspection of the rigging and replace anything that needs replacing. Also check mast wiring, masthead sheaves, and all the bits and pieces to the fittings. All things easy to do while working on a horizontal mast 3 feet off the ground. :)

In post 15 it looks like you already have a bolt through the mast for the shroud tangs? You could put the boom bail on the bolt, or a longer one, as needed.

Second that. First year I had the B310, the mast was down for the transport to me so I went through everything. Replaced all the sheaves, many of the plastic exit boxes, all the wiring, running rigging, lighting at the top and added a foredeck light.

2016 mast down again to replace the furling gear. On close inspection, found a hairline crack on one side of the stick where the lowers attach - had cracked from the hound to the hole drilled for the rivet. Luckily we have a lot of aluminum welders around here that are pros and I found one that could come out to the lake to do the repair properly. And, US Spars (Z-Spars) was very helpful in identifying the specific grade of aluminum and telling me the appropriate welding rods to be used. So, go over that stick with a magnifying glass while you have the opportunity.
