Oh yes - I have proper training in flares.
We have a local chandlery who conducts training each year, and our local Power Squadron also holds a flare training night. We also did flare training in the army.I was surprised to hear Ross say that 3 hand held flares is all the US Coast Guard requires. In Canada, a sailboat over 8M in length (but not over 12M) must carry a total of 12 approved flares. They can be Type A, B, C, or D, but not more than 6 of them can be Type D.The statement below is from King County (Seattle area) concerning flares - very interesting methinks - "Flares""A flare is good for 42 months from the date of manufacture. Their shelf life is limited because the chemicals in the product are exposed to moisture and varying temperatures and as a life-saving device it has to work properly. Just like photographic film or pharmaceuticals, the chemicals can break down over time. Flares more than five years old should not be set off at all as they could misfire and hurt someone."
