RE:So you're the jerk who fires them on July 4th.

you gives a rats rear end about the law on the 4 of July. Fireworks are illegal too! I guess you don't use then too. I was on an inland lake at a fireworks show at a private yacht club. The state police were there and didn't care. Get a life!

You can donate them to Ross

You can donate hand held flares to the Volunteer Fire Department, they will use them as road flares. I think if Ross lights one up in his yard it might trick someone into thinking it was a road flare and then they would avoid driving across his lawn. Anyway, Ross, I'm gonna miss people like you on here. I get on here less and less. Its not just the stupidity, but also the hostility and name calling. Kinda like the old theory that whoever argues louder is therefore right. Have you noticed that Franklin dont come on here any more either. I keep in touch with him when I'm back on land. He lives about a mile away from me. Sailed on his boat several weeks back. Nice Hunter. Anyway, this place is going downhill and I cant figure out why. It has nothing to do with Phil, he does a lot and he cant control personalities. Sometimes when my humor is 'off key' he removes my posts. Cant blame him for that. I noticed one time your replies were removed also. I thought it was kinda funny. Anyway, Phil has his hands full, I dont envy his job at times. I'll be checkin in from time to time just to say hello. Jimq26, I wouldn't accept it.

Jimq26 you have posted here occassionally and usually with very negative tones, Those things get my notice and I respond. I like to tell people that that if they have negative comments to make try also to say something very useful. ;)

At least you could eat your old flares if becalmed

out at sea. There is phosphorus in these things that could only be slightly poisinous and somewhat nutritiounal in value. Otherwise grind up the old flares and smokes and put them in your engines oil reservoir. That would give the old gal a bit of a 'kick'. Speaking seriously though, one man's ceiling is another man's floor, or something like that. If I were you I would be more concerned with the older engines out there that discharge oil and other stuff into the water than some guy shooting off an old flare or two on the 4th of July. I usually give my older flares etc to newer boat owners so I have not have to dispose of them myself and they have some flares that may not be up to USCG expiration dates but they have some flares, I may have some that I have to 'test' though. July 4th is a good bet to be ignored!

Ross - another sad comment.

You may wish to look at my many helpful (I hope), postings made over the years. None are misleading like your suggestion that the illegal discharge of flares when not an emergency or in a controlled dedicated location is acceptable. You must take into consideration the fact that there will be some newcomers to boating reading the forum. When you state that you can discharge flares wherever you wish, you are making a false statement that could be accepted as the truth by readers. I was also wondering why you say you only need 3 flares. Doesn't match with the Coast Guard requirement does it?

Tontb, I have a thick hide and Waffle has

his own point of view. I just consider the source and continue on my way. Some people make positive contributions here and some can only post negatively. There is room for everyone and when there is a nee for constructive and learned comment someone is always here to contribute. There are times when some of the group take a much too serious approach to the subject and become exercised when we make light of a question after it has been thoroughly discussed. We should just try to make allowance for them.

Jimq26, the cg requires three hand held flares!!

Popping a flare where it can not be seen from the water is of no concern to the maritime industry!!! I never suggested that you can or should discharge falres at you whim.. I stated that you may light them when completely away from the line of sight of the water when ever you like. If you must quote me please try to get it right!!

FED EX TO ME

Problem solved, just Fed Ex them to me and I will use them to burn my leaves this fall. Seriously, why not soak them in a bucket of water for a couple of days and but out on the curb? Rob Hessenius

Ross is right

There is nothing wrong with lighting a flare on one's own property and it is definately a good practice to familiarize yourself with how it is done. As was pointed out, the worst that will happen is no one will drive across your lawn while the flare is burning. Certainly, the Coast Guard will not be landing a helicopter to find out why you have a hand held flare burning in your back yard. Ariel flares are different since they can burn to the ground and could be a fire hazard. Your local police department WILL take your out of date cartridges and hand helds. I have done it several times, as I stated before. It is worth saving the newest of your outdated pyrotechnics. I keep the ones that are most recently outdated, as they will probably work. My plan is to use the current ones first, and if needed I would move to the outdated flares. I do not keep all my out dated flares as I would have dozens. The really old ones go to the police station who are quite willing to take them. It seems to me the solution to this issue is quite simple and I am puzzeled as to why it has become such a controversy.

Fed Ex them to Rob

Fed Ex them to Rob, he can become the Nationalal Flare Distribution Center. We can place our orders with Rob and on the next 4th of July, Ross will play the Star Spangled Banner. We will synchronize with his playing of the Anthem and when it gets to ".....and the rockets red glare". We all light up together. The flares, that is. I wonder if Jimq26 ever fired a flare gun just tio make sure he can operate safely. How many of you have ever fired a flare gun and know what to expect? Lets have a show of hands. And please don't fire your flare gun in the marina

That happened several years ago at my marina by an unknown jerk from the other side of the marina!!! The flare landed on a boat a few down from mine and burned a hole in a brand new bimini!!!!

Good Point TonyB

I was very surprised when shooting my flare gun for the first time. I envisioned a bright light way high in the sky visabile for miles and miles. But in a harbor I think that the flare might go unnoticed due to shore lights. It really brought home the point that you should only shoot flares when you see a potential rescuer. In my experience flares last a long time..at least 10 years. Some of the conflict about shooting off flares might be the fact that some of us live in cities and others out in the country. Some down south some in the northeast. In my neighborhood in an outlying suburb almost every house is shooting off fireworks on holidays. Rescue flares are poor fireworks as they aren't very loud, bright or high by comparison. No one even noticed me shooting off some old flares!!!! Also down south the attitude is more freedom and idividual responsibility...it's legal to own guns and illegal to shoot people. Up in the northeast there is more of an attitude that "uncle sam" knows best and that all of us citizens are to be treated as little nieces and nephews instead of as responsible adults. Responsible adults should be able to figure out how to safely dispose of flares without causing amyone any problems. BTW I love to read Ross' posts.
