Exhaust leak in 1966 Bristol 32

I have a 1966 Bristol 32 footer with the original 4 cylinder engine. Started it up this spring and the wet exhaust is leaking water. This is basically a pipe that goes from the exhuast manifold to the back of the boat.

My plan was to pull the exhaust pipe and have the leak welded. But I started working on it today, and I am not sure that I can actually pull the exhaust out of there without pulling the engine. Has anyone else tried this? I can unbolt the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold, pull the gas tank ( it is on top of the exhuast pipe) but will this give me enough cleaarnce to pull the pipe out of there? Would it be easier to try to patch it?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you have an Atomic 4 engine.
If the hot exhaust section has developed one leak it is probably time to re-do the entire hot section in new pipe - not as difficult as it might sound.

Gas tank on top of hot exhaust??? This does not sound good!

Is this a metal gas tank which can corrode or plastic that could melt?

You have the engine itself,

An exhaust manifold

A pipe (two inch black gas-like or galvanized metal?)

A rubber-like hose

A lift muffler (looks like a can)

More hose,

A connection on the back of the boat

The water outside your boat.

Where is the exhaust leak, please?

OEM on that boat was the A4. Should be a simple fix with most parts available at the local plumbing supply.

There is an exhuast mainfold on the A 4 engine. The exhaust pipe polts to that with a flange and four bolts. It makes a downward curve from the eninge, goes under the gas tank, then heads to the stern. There is another curve in the bulkead at the stern, right beofre it goes into the batter comartment, and finally out of the boat. The leak is at the first bend or curve from the engine. It looks like it has been patched before, but in the straight part. If I had to guess, I would say that they used JB weld and a covered it with rubber, and then put a hose clamp on either side. I am thinking that it is time to replace the whole thing, clean up the gas tank (while I have it out) replace all the fuel and vent lines, etc. Hopefully I will be able to get it out of there without too much trouble.

I plan to drain the gas tank on Tuesday and will take pictures as I go.

It sounds like you are describing the mixing elbow.

You can fabricate it from pipe, or buy one.

But again, without seeing what you are trying to describe, we are just guessing.
