Excessive? counter force on throttle (inboard Yanmar 3GM30F)

Since purchase of my boat this last April, /i and others have noticed that the throttle lever needs a lot of push forward to speed up the engine. It does not stay in position (and judging by the little rope loop hanging nearby this has been going on for a while!).

So, I am seeking help from this community on whether this is a common problem that I need to forget about.

Recently, I attempted to remove my Edson 335 binnacle but it would appear it had never been off, and therefore I had to drill out the heads, tried some heat but ended up snapping off the 4 SS bolts and ended up taking the binnacle to a fab shop to deal with restoration of the tapped holes.

I now have some parts from Edson, two new cables and have also checked what the raw throttle feel is like - it IS the problem. Apparently there are two springs which are part of the governor of the diesel engine.

Of course I could probably add a counter-spring at either end of the cable, but then would I not be interfering with a system which is designed to protect the engine?

Thanks in advance!

It is almost never the engine end, but rather right in the Edson unit. There are throttle friction adjustment screws(s). Edson's website should have a good manual to find out.

Stu,

I missed that altogether! And the tension in the throttle is turned way up compared to the shifter which isn’t tightened at all. Thanks for that! At the very least this tension screw is adding insult to injury.

You can't remove all the tension or the throttle won't stay open, it's a delicate balance that took me a couple tries to get right. You are correct that the force required seems excessive in comparison to other engines.

Thanks Ted,

I backed the screw all the way out and it’s still tight. I’m hoping that removal, clean and lube frees it up, else new sleeves perhaps. Fingers crossed…

Has anyone removed the engine throttle and shifter control shafts? Say to replace the delrin sleeve? Almost seems like it would need to be pressed out…

I had exact issues on my 3GM30F. The cable was frayed. Once I replaced the cable it works fine. Good time to replace. steering chain since it needed to come off to run cable. Used Kroil on bolts but still needed to cut one and use heat once plastic piece was off.

I’m curious what the replacement chain cost? I looked at alternatives to purchasing the Edson replacement. The only places I found sold 10’ 316 stainless 520 chain except one vendor in the UK sold by the metre. All I needed was 18.125’ or 29 links. 316 SS 719 is far easier to come by but the crimps are not. Then the interface links. I’m going to see what it feels like after I get it reassembled. Perhaps next year for the chain, cable and sprocket and maybe a paint job.

I ordered from Edson pre made to fit. Can not remember cost but better than having to take out twice. Not an easy job

:plus:I found this out after I replaced my cables! The throttle wouldn't stay put anymore. I had released the tension so the old cable would move. With the new one, I had to add tension back in!

Copy that. FYI all I did was remove the clips on the tie link which is in the middle of the 18” section of chain. Even the 520 chain itself will not go through the holes under the binnacle let alone the swages with covering! Then again the goal was to remove the binnacle for repair.

I think after all the posts on this that "the little rope loop hanging nearby" isn't so bad.
It’s looking like either the delrin sleeve has expanded or corrosion between it and the cast aluminum housing.
