Single screw, no bow thruster.....tough in a narrow channel and a big breeze. He probably should have anchored to let the wind drop.

I went thru the Suez Canal in 1987 onboard USS California, the Egyptian pilot (compulsory) was drunk, passed out in the Captain's chair.

The images of the ships at either end of the canal anchored awaiting the opening... Looks like a train wreck piled up by a closed tunnel.

Saw an image of this disaster with goofy tug boats trying to straighten the ship out in the channel. Their prop thrust was directly against the grounded hull. Sum total of towing power is zero. All they are doing is stretching the lines. They need to run a bow line and a stern line to the respective opposite shore and attach to large earth moving equipment with real traction.

Perhaps they are concerned about ripping the hull bottom off the boat

Need traction to straighten boat. Tugboats useless.

Spitballing here, but the Tugs might be there to stabilize the ship.

In general, the water in the canal north of the Bitter Lakes flows north in winter and south in summer. South of the lakes, the current changes with the tide at Suez. (internet)

They may also be attempting to use the current flowing through the canal to help free the ship and once free control it within the canal.
