Has anyone ever had to replace their engine stringers ? I just tore out all the wood in the bilge, removed the engine and decided to replace the motor mounts. Low and behold the starboard engine stringer is a bit wet and punky. I've cut the glass off, drilled holes dried it with heat lamps and am thinking of trying the west system with 404 and then reglass over. The smarter side of me says just replace them.

Thoughts ?

R,

Sorry to hear about your stringers. Personally, I would not consider the West system as a repair. The system is good as used in the proper repair settings, but if the stringers are wet, the rot can be greater than what you hoped. You may spend more time trying a bandaid fix rather "than do it right, do it once'. Should the wood fail while under power, you may invite more damage.

Call Kent @ Catalina in Calif. He will send the original drawings of the stringers with install info. Look at them & it will help you decide a course of action. He's a good guy and always helps.

The number to call is 818.884.7700, ask for Kent in the engineering dept.

Good luck pal...

I hope your boat is not in the water while your doing this. Flex would be a problem.

I have done some research on this, one way to fix it is to replace the wood and glass, then have 2 full length "caps" made from stainless. They would be through bolted through the new stringers and carry the 2 mounts on each side. You need enough clearance though so the caps can get nutted under the motor mount, mounts. kind of hard to explain, let me know if you want to chat
