Engine Starting Sequence

Is there a preferred sequence to starting the universal engine on my 1985 Tall Rig? I've been told to turn the engine over with the stop handle pulled out to pre lube the engine. Also how long should I depress the glo plug switch before I try to start the engine. Do I have to keep the glo plug button depressed when I engage the starter? Just got the boat in the water but I don't have the engine manual. Also where is the sump pump located and when is it used. I might be blind but have not been able to find it. Finally (for now) we have shore power but am not sure what position to leave the battery switch in when we leave the boat for the week. I have an AC charger but am not sure if the charger is charging the battery when the switch is in the off position. Thanks in advance MarcP

5411 Diesel

The pre-lube sequence sounds ok. I have not done that. My starting sequence goes as follows for my Universal 5411 diesel. Turn on blower for 1 minute. Shift transmission into neutral. Turn on ignition key switch. Set throttle to mid range. If engine is cold, hold glow plug switch for 1 minute. Then engage starter motor. Engine should start quickly. If not continue to hold glow plug and try again. If the engine is warmed up I always just start like you would your car. Throttle back and let the engine warm up before putting a load on it. I'm not sure what you mean by the "sump pump". I am guessing the bilge pump. It should be amidships above the keel. It should have an automatic float switch to activate it. If it does not I would recommend that you invest in one. I leave my battery switch to both when hooked to shorepower. It is wired so that when it is "OFF" no power can go into or from both battery banks. Have an electrician check how your charger is wired. If it is directly connected to the batteries, it should charge even with the switch off. This is how "I" do it, but it does not mean it is the only way...

Engine starting sequence M-25

My battery charger is hooked directly to the batteries and charges the batteries anytime the shore power cord is hooked up. Here's a link to an on-line operators manual for the Universal M-25 which includes the starting sequence. http://www.marinedieseldirect.com/universal/200157/ Hope it helps
