Hello!

I'm reinstalling cables on my Yanmar and currently troubleshooting my engine shutoff lever. The lower cable in the picture is my governor. the higher one is the engine shutoff pull cable. I think what's supposed to happen is the shutoff lever yanks back on that piston (adjustor body) allowing the governor cable to go further back. in my case though, the governor doesn't and the shutoff cable doesn't do anything. Maybe I'm missing something? What could prevent the governor from springing back? I've greased many of the parts to get them to slide easily. Any help appreciated.

Is this bracket loose (and moving ) when you operate the engine fuel cut off? Or did you it to clean and retightened it a bit off the original spot?

Hi Greg, that piece does move. You can see where the top bolt can slide. Right now the top one is loose to allow that play the other is secured. The cables don't move that piece of the lever at all and I'm wondering if it's supposed to be static.

I think that the bracket is supposed to be static and not move once it is in the right position and tightened. The bracket is designed so it can pivot into the right position (gives you the ability to adjust the angle a bit), but it is supposed to be tight on pace adjusted.

if the bracket isn’t moving, then I guess it is not contributing to your issue, but I would tighten it anyway.

Once, my transmission got “bound up“after I wrapped a rope around my prop. I had to force the transmission lever a bit to get the transmission out of gear. At some point, it moved, but then I couldn’t shift into gear:yikes:. I was right outside my marina, so had a friend come put and tow me in to the fuel dock.

After diving to cut the rope free, I inspected the transmission and found that the clamp that holds the shift cable in place came off when I forced the transmission lever. At that point, moving the shifter lever just moved the cable back and forth, but it didn’t move the shift lever. Once I put the cable clamp back on, all was well.

That experience made me wonder about that loose bracket on your engine.

Good luck.
